Position Summary:
The Plastic Extrusion Development Technician supports the design, development, and optimization of plastic extrusion processes and tooling. This hands-on role involves setting up, operating, and troubleshooting extrusion equipment during new product development, trials, and process improvement initiatives. The technician collaborates with engineers and production staff to ensure safe, efficient, and repeatable manufacturing processes for high-quality plastic products.
Key Responsibilities:
Set up and operate plastic extrusion machinery for R&D and process development trials. Assist in the development and optimization of extrusion processes and tooling for new and existing products. Interpret technical drawings, process sheets, and setup instructions. Monitor and record key process parameters during trials and production runs. Perform routine adjustments and troubleshooting to ensure optimal machine operation. Conduct quality checks on extruded products using calipers, micrometers, and other gauges. Collaborate with engineers to evaluate trial results and recommend process modifications. Assist in the documentation of setup sheets, work instructions, and process parameters. Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas in compliance with safety standards. Support the transition of new extrusion processes from development to production. Maintain inventory of materials, tooling, and spare parts required for development work.
Requirements:
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or GED required; technical certificate or associate degree preferred. 3+ years of experience operating plastic extrusion equipment; development or R&D experience a plus.
Skills & Abilities:
Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of extrusion principles. Ability to read technical drawings and interpret process documentation. Proficient with measurement tools and quality inspection techniques. Capable of troubleshooting mechanical and process issues independently. Good written and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented and safety-conscious. Basic computer skills for data entry and reporting. Basic understanding of process capability and manufacturing statistics a plus.
