Job Description

Job Title:
Process Molding Technician Job Description The Process Molding Technician sets up, optimizes, and monitors plastic injection molding processes to ensure consistent production of high-quality parts. This role manages complete mold start-ups, supports new product introductions, and continuously improves existing processes through data-driven analysis. The technician works closely with engineering, quality, tooling, and production teams to maintain robust, repeatable processes and support ongoing operational excellence. Responsibilities Perform complete job start-up activities from last good part to first good part, ensuring all elements are ready, including tools and inserts, materials, auxiliary support equipment, secondary operation equipment, gages and fixtures, partial inventory staging, part qualification, and operator training acknowledgment. Set up and approve processes for scheduled production on plastic injection molding machines, ensuring all parameters align with standard molding procedures and company practices. Set and adjust machine controls, including molding temperature, plastic volume, molding pressure, and cycle time, to achieve stable and efficient production. Verify that correct and approved materials are used for production and ensure all material handling steps follow established procedures. Establish, maintain, and measure process set points and outputs to consistently produce quality parts at the approved optimum cycle time. Maintain quality parts by adhering to approved cycle times, control plans, part print dimensions, and date stamp validation. Routinely inspect products once released to production to confirm ongoing conformance to specifications and quality standards. Electronically record process inputs and outputs to create repeatable and transferable processes and to support future optimizations and value engineering. Monitor scrap rates and secondary operation constraints for lifecycle products and develop statistically driven models for process capability studies and optimization. Review production data by family or part level on a quarterly or as-needed basis, summarize findings through Pareto analysis, and help focus continuous improvement efforts on the highest-yield opportunities. Support new product introduction by facilitating mold trials in coordination with manufacturing engineering, assisting in experiment design, testing, material handling, measurement of outputs, and documenting all inputs and outputs. Lead new product and process development activities and work closely with the quality department to facilitate the PPAP process. Run material testing trials for alternate or secondary resin approvals and report all findings and observations in a clear and organized manner. Sign off on production articles for production staff to use as aesthetic and quality references in accordance with approved first articles at start-up. Collect and retain samples for customer first article inspection and approval in coordination with the quality department. Retain and label samples from the last untrimmed shots before mold changes to support traceability and future reference. Ensure all operating supplies, work instructions, packaging materials, drilling operations, and poke-yoke devices are in place before granting production approval. Document all scrap produced at start-up and during color changes, maintaining accurate records for analysis and improvement. Monitor scrap rates throughout production or at the conclusion of jobs, generate mold performance reports and Pareto data, and help guide improvement plans. Ensure scheduled production work orders are opened in the manufacturing execution system (Mattec) before starting production. Calculate and mix material blend ratios as needed for testing and production, ensuring accurate and consistent blends. Troubleshoot and resolve plastic injection molding defects within the capabilities of the tools and processes, making appropriate adjustments to maintain part quality. Keep machines running effectively by addressing short shots and making small process adjustments to ensure parts are produced correctly. Communicate processing and tooling capability concerns effectively with leadership and relevant departments. Lead by example on the production floor and assist in training and developing production staff on processes and best practices. Support the quality department in auditing operational processes to ensure assured quality and fit, form, and function of products. Conduct and document preventive maintenance on molds in production to maintain tool performance and longevity. Collaborate with the tooling and set-up department to ensure all molds are labeled with identification numbers, utilities, and auxiliary equipment information. Update tooling tracker status to reflect current mold and tool conditions and availability. Essential Skills At least 2+ years of experience as an Injection Molding Process Technician. Demonstrated ability to perform full mold set-ups and tooling changes from start to finish. Proficiency in setting machine controls for injection molding, including temperature, pressure, volume, and cycle time. Ability to perform delayed starts and manage color changes on injection molding equipment. Experience keeping injection molding machines running effectively by addressing short shots and making fine process adjustments. Strong knowledge of scientific molding principles and their practical application on the production floor. Experience with plastic injection molding processes, mold tooling, and machine operation. Mechanical aptitude and the ability to work with molding, tooling, and machine set-up tasks. Ability to calculate and mix material blend ratios accurately for testing and production. Capability to troubleshoot and resolve injection molding defects within the limits of the tooling and process. Competence in electronically recording process inputs and outputs to support repeatability and optimization. Effective verbal and written communication skills to interface with multiple departments and personnel. Additional Skills & Qualifications Completion of RJG courses, such as Master Molder, or equivalent scientific molding training. Experience with 3-axis pick-and-place automation and integration with molding processes. Experience working with automated machines and automation-assisted molding operations. Experience with glass-filled nylon molding processes and material handling. Preferred experience operating or driving forklifts in a manufacturing environment. Experience supporting PPAP activities and new product introduction trials. Familiarity with preventive maintenance practices for molds and tooling. Experience using manufacturing execution systems such as Mattec for work order management. Why Work Here?
