Treatment Plant Maintenance Specialist City of Puyallup

Qualifications Knowledge of:
Journey level mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic theory; Basic welding methods, materials and equipment; Journey level pump and motor overhauling to include knowledge of bearings, packing and mechanical seals; Knowledge and experience with industrial electrical components including motor starters and controls, circuits, variable frequency drives (VFD), and industrial communication networks ; Familiarity and knowledge of industrial automation to include programmable logic controllers (PLC's) their applicability, uses and programming; Knowledge of and experience with fluid hydraulics and pump, piping and plumbing systems; Familiarity and knowledge of computers, computer software to include MS Word and MS Excel, and knowledge of computer based maintenance software programs; Fundamental understanding of high voltage, 3-phase, electrical power, control systems, safety, and electrical hazards, such as arc-flash; Knowledge of journey level maintenance practices and machinery repair skills operating a variety of shop equipment and hand tools.Ability to:
Ability to read and interpret civil, structural and mechanical drawings, schematics, and basic electrical wiring diagrams; Ability to perform basic fabrication and welding of plant piping, machinery, guards and bases, stairs, railings and frames using a variety of welding equipment; Ability to accurately diagnose equipment malfunctions and take corrective action according to manufacturer's recommendations or specifications; Ability to demonstrate good verbal, written, communication and interpersonal skills; Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with supervisors, other plant staff, other City employees, and the public; Ability to accurately and legibly record equipment, instrument, time, testing, and other data in a prescribed format to include computerized data entry into a maintenance and/or operational database; Ability to work independently or as part of a team; Ability to assume responsibility for the safe use of tools, equipment and the safety of others working in the immediate area; Substantial work experience, training, or some combination of both related to the mechanical maintenance and repair of equipment types previously listed or other complex mechanical equipment. Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of work; and Maintain regular, reliable and punctual attendance.Education and Experience:
Requires graduation from high school or equivalent; two years of experience strictly in a maintenance capacity at a secondary wastewater treatment plant; or, significant industrial mechanical repair experience; or, graduation from a post-secondary vocational, or other program of training where skills and knowledge related to this position may have been learned; or, military experience and work in a specialty related to this type of work; or, some combination of education and experience that would suggest the ability to successfully perform the duties of this position.DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS A
vocational degree or certificate of completion from an accredited institution, or other recognized formal training of one-year or more duration, in a course of study related to some of the duties of this position. Formal training and/or extended machine shop or repair shop experience with welders, metal lathes, milling machines, and similar equipment. State certification as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator. Documented formal electrical training. Documented industrial computer network skills. Special Requirements Possession of or the ability to obtain, and maintain throughout employment, a valid Washington State driver's license. Must pass a pre-employment physical examination. Physical Characteristics and Work Environment This position frequently requires the physical strength and agility to lift and/or carry parts and heavy equipment (lifting and carrying 50 pounds); the ability to perform frequent and repetitive hand motion associated with the operation of hand and power tools. Must demonstrate normal vision and depth perception and eye/hand/foot coordination in order to perform the duties/tasks associated with the position. Also must have fine motor control of the arms, hands, and fingers. An ability to frequently perform manual work activities on a sustained basis is required including frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, walking, and climbing and descending ladders. Must be able to occasionally enter and egress through manhole size openings and be able to frequently ascend and descend narrow circular staircases and ladders. Must be able to enter, egress, and operate various types of motor driven equipment on a frequent basis. Regularly works from heights, including ladders, scaffolding, and mechanical lift equipment. Environmental factors include working around loud, moving, mechanical equipment; work in or around wastewater tanks, appurtenances; or other wet slipping-prone environments; exposure to sewage; exposure to sewage sludge and activated sludge;. potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens; entry into confined spaces containing hazardous atmospheres; and, risks associated with mechanical, electrical, and drowning hazards. Regularly works from heights, including ladders, scaffolding, and mechanical lift equipment.SELECTION PROCESS
