Job Description

Job Summary Under general supervision, the Water Distribution Operator performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of the Township's public water distribution system and sewer collection systems. This includes ensuring safe, reliable delivery of potable water to residents and businesses while complying with federal, state, and local regulations. The role involves fieldwork, emergency response, and routine system upkeep in a municipal/township environment. Also assuring that our sewer system is flowing as designed. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Monitors, operates, and maintains the water distribution system and sewer collection system, including mains, valves, hydrants, storage tanks, booster stations, and pumping facilities. Inspects, locates, and repairs water main breaks, leaks, and service line issues; performs pipe tapping, valve exercising, and line flushing. Installs, reads, tests, repairs, and replaces water meters, service connections, and related appurtenances. Collects water quality samples from distribution points and performs basic field testing (e.g., chlorine residuals); assists with regulatory compliance sampling. Responds to customer inquiries and complaints regarding water pressure, quality, leaks, or service interruptions; performs turn-ons, turn-offs, and re-reads as needed. Operates heavy equipment (e.g., backhoe, dump truck, etc.), power tools, and hand tools safely and efficiently in the maintenance and construction of water infrastructure. Performs routine preventative maintenance on system components, including cleaning, painting, exercising valves, and monitoring sewage lift stations. Conducts fire hydrant flushing, testing, and maintenance; ensures adequate fire flow capacity. Applicant will be expected to regularly respond to, an on-call rotation for after-hour emergencies (e.g., main breaks, pressure issues, or service disruptions). Maintains accurate records of work performed, meter readings, repairs, water usage, and maintenance activities; assists with updating system maps and databases. Ensures compliance with safety protocols, including confined space entry, traffic control, trenching/shoring, and personal protective equipment requirements etc. Collaborates with other Public Works staff on related tasks (e.g., street repairs following water main work) and coordinates with contractors or other utilities as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned to support Township operations.
Qualifications Required:
High school diploma or GED equivalent. Valid driver's license Basic knowledge of water distribution systems, plumbing, hydraulics, and safety practices. Physical ability to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting up to 50-100 lbs., working in adverse weather conditions, and entering confined spaces. Ability to learn and perform procedures as instructed. Ability to work well with others, receiving instruction willingly. Must be a team player, driven to completing a job with a high quality of excellence.
Preferred:
Previous experience in water utility operations, public works, construction, or a related field (1-3 years preferred). Familiarity with SCADA systems, GIS mapping, or basic computer applications for record-keeping. Experience operating construction equipment (backhoe, excavator, etc.). Will train on the job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Mechanically inclined Knowledge of principles and practices of water distribution system maintenance and operation. Basic understanding of water quality regulations and sampling procedures. Skill in troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, and plumbing issues in water systems. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maps, and technical manuals. Strong safety awareness and commitment to following OSHA and Township safety standards. Effective communication skills for interacting with the public, coworkers, and supervisors. Ability to work independently or as part of a team, including during emergencies. Working Conditions & Physical Demands Work is primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions; may involve exposure to traffic, noise, chemicals, and biohazards. Requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting for extended periods. Compensation $25.00/hr; Max 30 hrs/week. Part-time, seasonal summer position.
