Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
: This position differs from Crew Worker II in that 5 years' relevant experience is required and must be OQ Certified. Must have Locator experience and possess the ITS Proctor Exam Certification.Employee works under supervision of the Gas Department Supervisor or Crew Lead. This employee will be the senior field hand directly under the crew lead. This employee will oversee the crew in the absence of the crew leader. Work to be performed is maintenance and construction of the natural gas system. Duties also include support services of other employees in the department. The Crew Leader or Supervisor will spot check work as it is being done, and review most of the completed work. The employee will routinely operate light duty vehicle, a generator, plastic pipe welder, leak detector, pipe and valve locators, CO detector, Odorator, CGI meter, fusematic machine, and hand tools such as shovels, hoe, rake, wrenches, etc. Then employee will also be required to operate a backhoe or trencher. This employee may also be required to assist in proctoring for Operator Qualification testing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Maps locations;
- Installs natural gas mains;
- Installs gas taps and service lines, and submit drawings of the taps and lines for records; Install meter and regulator set; Tap pipelines under pressure; Purge gas lines; Perform leakage and patrol surveys of gas distribution piping;
- Welds plastic pipe;
- Checks for and repairs gas leaks;
- Performs maintenance on regulator stations;
- Performs annual maintenance on gas valves;
- Locates valve boxes and gas mains and marks locations to comply with Tennessee One Call;
- Locates and marks underground pipeline facilities;
- Handles Utility Office work orders, such as lighting pilots, and turning service ON/OFF for customers, as directed.
- Required to operate a backhoe, skid loader, tractor, and/or trencher;
- Regularly cleans vehicle and equipment provided and sees to the service records on the vehicle; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.- Must successfully complete natural gas operator qualifications training administered by Portland Natural Gas and maintain throughout employment;
- Knowledge of occupational hazard and safety precautions;
- Ability to operate equipment, such as trencher, tractor, etc.;
- Ability to use necessary machinery, tools, and equipment as required by job including driving light trucks;
- Ability to read and understand maps;
- Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions;
- Ability to safely meet the physical demand requirements of the job;
- Ability to read meters;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees; and
- Must have a good work and attendance record
- Ability to be contacted by phone and ready to respond in case of afterhours emergency within timeframe listed in City of Portland Personnel Policy
- Ability to be "on call" nights and weekends, as scheduled EDUCATION and/or
EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or GED;
- 5 years' experience with Portland's natural gas systems required;
- Must pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination, drug test and background check as well as be covered under Research and Special Programs Administration (RSPA) regulations which require pre-employment and random drug screenings and breath alcohol testing;
- Must have a good work and attendance record;
- Backhoe excavation experience preferred.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS
- Valid driver's license.
- Portland Natural Gas Operator Qualifications
- ITS Proctor Certification Required.
