Position Summary:
The Structural Crafts Manager oversees all steel, welding, ship-fitting, and rigging operations in a fast-paced shipyard environment. This role ensures safety compliance, workforce management, project execution, and quality control, working closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, and Working Leaders. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership, problem-solving, and technical expertise to drive efficiency, productivity, and profitability.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Management Lead and mentor teams using Ownership, Responsibility, and Accountability (ORA) principles. Train Work Leaders, Leadmen, and Technicians in safety, cost control, and job skills. Manage manpower levels, ensuring the right workforce is available for each project. Enforce compliance with company policies, safety regulations, and quality standards. Operations & Project Execution Direct all phases of steel fabrication, welding, ship-fitting, and rigging, including planning, scheduling, and execution. Monitor project performance, providing Estimate to Complete (ETC) reports. Ensure production schedules align with budgets, specifications, and deadlines. Identify and resolve issues related to craft performance, schedules, manpower, and budgets. Maintain and inspect equipment, tools, and machinery for peak operational performance. Safety & Compliance Serve as a leader in safety, ensuring compliance with OSHA, ABS, AWS, USCG, and SOLAS regulations. Promote hazard identification, Lockout/Tagout, and Near Miss reporting. Client & Stakeholder Coordination Collaborate with Project Managers, Superintendents, and other departments to ensure alignment on project goals. Maintain strong relationships with clients and ensure contract specifications are met. Financial & Administrative Responsibilities Oversee budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation to ensure cost-effective operations. Track welding procedures and qualifications, ensuring compliance with standards. Utilize Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) for reporting and administrative tasks.
Qualifications & Requirements:
10+ years of experience in structural steel, welding, and rigging within a shipyard or industrial setting. 5+ years of supervisory experience managing multidisciplinary teams. Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction, or a related field (preferred) or equivalent work experience. Strong knowledge of ABS, AWS, USCG, and OSHA regulations. Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Valid rigging or hoisting license (preferred).
Physical & Work Environment:
Must be able to tour vessels, docks, and work sites. Frequently required to stand, walk, climb, kneel, and lift up to 50 lbs. Exposure to loud noise, extreme weather, and industrial hazards.
