Position Summary The Shift Supervisor is a hands-on position responsible for training, supervising, and leading the production team, in coordination with the Maintenance Lead Millwright and in support of the Superintendent, overseeing and coordinating all operational activities on their assigned shift within the paper mill. This role ensures efficient production, maintains safety standards, and drives continuous improvement initiatives. The Shift Supervisor will provide leadership and direction to the production team, troubleshoot operational issues, and ensure adherence to quality standards and production schedules. Job Duties and Responsibilities (may include but are not limited to)
Leadership and Supervision:
o Provide clear direction and leadership to the production team. o Foster a positive and collaborative work environment. o Communicate effectively with team members regarding production goals, safety procedures, and operational updates. o Monitor employee performance, provide feedback, and identify training needs. o Ensure proper staffing levels and manage shift schedules.
Operational Management:
o Oversee the operation of the paper machine and related equipment to ensure efficient and safe production. o Monitor production processes and identify and resolve operational issues promptly. o Ensure adherence to production schedules and quality standards. o Coordinate with maintenance and technical teams to address equipment malfunctions and schedule preventative maintenance. o Maintain accurate production records and reports.
Safety and Compliance:
o Enforce all safety policies and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment for all team members. o Conduct regular safety audits and address any potential hazards. o Participate in safety training and incident investigations as required. o Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and mill policies.
Quality Control:
o Monitor product quality throughout the production process. o Implement and enforce quality control procedures. o Identify and address quality issues, implementing corrective actions as needed. o Collaborate with the quality assurance team to ensure product specifications are met.
Troubleshooting and Problem Solving:
o Analyze operational problems and implement effective solutions in a timely manner. o Utilize problem-solving techniques to identify root causes and prevent recurrence. o Escalate complex issues to the appropriate personnel when necessary.
Continuous Improvement:
o Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency gains. o Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and projects. o Implement best practices to optimize production processes and reduce waste.
Communication and Coordination:
o Communicate effectively with other shifts and departments to ensure smooth transitions and information sharing. o Participate in production meetings and provide updates on shift performance. o Collaborate with supply chain and logistics teams as needed. Education, Certifications, and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Pulp and Paper Technology, Engineering) preferred.
- 3-5 years of substantial experience within a paper mill environment with progressive leadership responsibilities.
- Strong understanding of paper manufacturing processes, equipment, and quality standards.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in an industrial environment.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite and production management systems.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights and weekends, as required.
- Formal leadership training or certification.
- Experience with lean manufacturing or other continuous improvement methodologies.
- Knowledge of specific paper machine technologies and control systems. Work Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Must be able to work in a paper mill environment which may involve exposure to noise, temperature variations (cold, heat, and humidity), dust, and chemicals.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting 50 lbs., walking, climbing, stooping, pushing, and pulling for extended periods (up to 12-hour shifts).
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Pay:
$70,000.00 - $90,000.00 per month
