Steel Supply & Engineering is a privately owned manufacturing company servicing the construction industry in Grand Rapids, MI. We like to have fun, yet get things done. Summary :
Position provides leadership and guidance for production and directs production per production schedule. Position also reports scheduling issues to Plant Manager, assists with quality checks, receives and organizes parts and follows/implements general safety procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Controls workflow by material handling with overhead crane. Able to operate all yard equipment. Directs workload per employee capabilities. Sits in on weekly production meeting. Manages shop floor space with current workload. Reviews prints prior to fabrication looking for galvanized, oversize, CJP (complete joint penetration) or any other out-of-ordinary work. Receives daily parts shipments and organizes parts for production. Must be able to lift 70 lbs. Checks in finished prints, marks traveler, files in job specific box when completed. Provides guidance with fabrication and welding techniques. Performs quality checks. Helps schedule weld inspections. Communicates with Project Management and job captains on project-related questions and detailing. Fills in for plant manager during absences. Process releases for purchasing. Helps enforce company policies and procedures. Helps enforce safety policies and procedures.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Supervise, lead, and manage employees.
  • Responsible for shift production.
  • Able to communicate shift expectations to employees.
  • Responsible for securing shop at shift end.
  • Disciplines plant personnel as necessary.
  • Leads staff initiatives to maximize organizational efficiency and profitability.
  • Provide appropriate instruction and/or training resources to Department personnel.
  • Monitor and direct the day-to-day activities of Department personnel.
  • Strong analytical skills, mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity are preferred.
  • Able to read, write and speak English.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Self-starter who can work with minimal or little supervision.
