Job Description

Job Title:
Metals Inspector Job Description The Metals Inspector observes and monitors incoming scrap metal deliveries to verify they meet established quality and quantity specifications while consistently following Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. This role supports daily production operations by assisting with receiving, sorting, and stockpiling materials and products, and requires a solid understanding of raw materials, production processes, and techniques that ensure the efficient receipt and transfer of quality product. Responsibilities Inspect shipments of scrap metal received via truck, rail car, or ship to confirm they meet material specifications and comply with scrap acceptance policies. Verify that incoming materials are free from environmental hazards and document any issues in accordance with company procedures. Accurately identify and record inspection data, including weight, grade, content, and quantity of scrap metal. Notify operations and commercial supervisors of problems found during inspections and assist in recommending corrective actions. Support daily production operations by helping with the receiving and stockpiling of materials and finished products. Perform general labor tasks in the scrap metal yard, including cleaning and sweeping work areas. Move materials and scrap metal safely throughout the facility using appropriate methods and tools. Remove debris and waste from work areas to maintain a safe and organized yard. Contribute to general facility upkeep by keeping inspection and production areas clean, orderly, and free of hazards. Follow all Health, Safety, and Environmental procedures and actively participate in maintaining a safe work environment around heavy machinery and moving equipment. Essential Skills At least 1 year of related work experience in construction, machine shop, manufacturing, or production environments. Minimum of 1 year of experience performing any type of inspection, demonstrating strong attention to detail. Ability to accurately observe, identify, and document material characteristics such as weight, grade, content, and quantity. Knowledge of raw materials and basic production processes related to metals or industrial operations. Capability to perform general labor tasks, including lifting, moving, sorting, and cleaning in a physically demanding environment. Comfort working around heavy machinery, moving parts, loud noise, and dirty conditions while following safety procedures. Strong awareness of Health, Safety, and Environmental standards and willingness to comply with all guidelines. Effective communication skills to report issues and collaborate with supervisors and production teams. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in general labor, production, or maintenance roles in industrial or recycling settings. experience in sorting, cleaning, and handling scrap metal or similar materials. Familiarity with scrap metal yards or recycling operations. Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Work Environment The work environment is a steel, metal, and auto recycling facility with a long-standing presence in the industry. The site includes an indoor production area and a large outdoor yard, with operations taking place in both covered and open-air structures. Team members work around heavy machinery, moving parts, and loud noise, and the setting is very dirty due to the nature of scrap metal handling and processing. Work may be assigned in areas such as Joint Products or similar yard departments, where tasks are performed partially under structures or fully outdoors in the middle of the yard. Employees should expect a physically demanding industrial environment, consistent use of appropriate personal protective equipment, and adherence to all safety procedures while performing inspection, material handling, and general labor tasks. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Oakland, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr.
