This is a full-time position (approximately 40 hours per week; overtime as needed). Who We Are Berkeley Yeast is a yeast innovation company developing novel brewing strains using advanced genetic techniques. Our strains are designed to produce targeted flavor and aroma compounds during fermentation (tropical, citrus, floral, herbaceous, dank, spicy, etc.) while improving performance attributes such as reduced off-flavors (e.g., diacetyl), faster fermentation, and control over flocculation and attenuation. Our goal is to give brewers better tools to make great beer while saving time, reducing cost, and lowering environmental impact. About the Position The Production Assistant supports manufacturing operations across the lab, cellar, and packaging departments by preparing equipment and materials, maintaining inventories, supporting aseptic processes, and helping ensure production activities run efficiently. This is a highly cross-functional role that provides exposure to many aspects of yeast manufacturing, including laboratory support, propagation support, packaging support, inventory management, facility organization, and shipment preparation. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, organization, adaptability, and a willingness to help wherever support is needed. Unlike many production support roles, this position works directly alongside multiple departments with visibility into the full lifecycle of the product, from culture to customer. Work Environment & Expectations Repetitive, high-precision work is a core part of this role Strict adherence to SOPs, aseptic technique, documentation, and process control is required Work is closely integrated with manufacturing operations and production timelines Daily priorities may shift based on production needs and departmental support requirements; flexibility and adaptability are important Primary Responsibilities Prepare equipment and materials for laboratory, cellar, and packaging operations Operate autoclaves safely and effectively Support aseptic work using laminar flow hoods Prepare media, chemical solutions, and laboratory supplies Pour agar plates and support routine laboratory activities Prepare and pack shipments accurately Maintain inventories of consumables, supplies, and production materials Receive and organize incoming shipments Maintain facility, equipment, and work area cleanliness and organization Support preventative maintenance activities and routine equipment upkeep Secondary Responsibilities Parts assembly and stocking Equipment setup and assembly Cross-functional support for lab, cellar, and packaging departments Interdepartmental support as needed What We're Looking For Strong team-oriented mindset; takes ownership of shared outcomes Ability to work independently while maintaining quality and safety standards Comfort following SOPs with high consistency High attention to detail and documentation accuracy Strong time management and ability to handle multiple workflows Commitment to aseptic technique, quality, and process control Clear communication and positive, collaborative attitude Efficiency-minded with a focus on throughput and quality Ability to identify support needs, maintain organization across multiple work areas, and proactively assist teams before issues impact operations Curiosity and analytical thinking; able to use observations and data to make informed recommendations And of course, an enthusiasm for beer and science! Availability:
Sunday to Friday Typical shifts: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM or 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM Preferred Experience Brewery, fermentation, food production, laboratory, or regulated manufacturing experience Familiarity with quality systems and food/manufacturing standards (e.g., GMP, HACCP) Exposure to ERP or inventory management systems Proper use of PPE and aseptic technique Experience maintaining inventories, receiving materials, or supporting production operations Mechanical aptitude and comfort with basic equipment maintenance Compensation & Benefits $45,000 to $50,000 per year, commensurate with experience Health, dental, and vision insurance 401(k) with employer matching after 1 year Flexible PTO policy designed to balance personal time and operational needs
