This role focuses on developing technical printing skills while contributing to press setup, color control, defect detection, and machine operation. A typical day includes reading job jackets, assisting with press setup, maintaining housekeeping standards, performing quality checks, and ensuring compliance with safety, SQF, and operational procedures. How you will impact
Smurfit Westrock:
Assist in daily press operations including color control, registration, coating, and defect identification and correction. Support press setup and make-ready processes to meet customer specifications. Read and interpret job jackets to ensure accurate production execution. Maintain housekeeping and 5S standards within the production area. Perform quality checks on cartons and materials throughout production. Operate and support printing presses to help meet production goals and maximize efficiency. Load materials, including skids and ink, and assist with plate hanging and blanket changes. Clean and maintain press equipment, including rollers and blankets. Record production data and notes within shop floor computer systems. Support team communication and assist in training and skill development. Follow all safety policies, participate in safety programs, and promote a safe working environment. Comply with SQF and all workplace policies and procedures.
What you need to succeed:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Basic math and measurement skills (calculator, ruler, tape measure). Ability to learn and operate testing equipment such as pH meters, densitometers, and viscosity tools. Forklift certification and pallet jack operation (or ability to obtain). Basic computer skills, including shop floor data systems. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Mechanical aptitude and ability to follow detailed instructions. Ability to work in a team environment and develop skills for advancement. Successful completion of Farnsworth Munsell-100 Hue Test preferred.
Physical Demands:
This position requires standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting throughout the workday. Employees must be able to lift between 30-50 pounds individually and up to 150 pounds with team assistance. Tasks include carrying ink, loading materials, handling plates and rollers, and using tools for maintenance and cleaning. Occasional driving of tow motors may be required with certification.
Safety Requirements:
Wear required PPE at all times including safety glasses, steel/composite toe shoes, hearing protection, gloves, and bump caps. Follow all safety policies, programs, and guidelines. Participate in safety initiatives including STEP (Stop, Think, Evaluate, Plan). Promote a safety-first culture and support peer safety interventions (Lets Talk Safety). Adhere to safety absolutes and company safety expectations.
