Roll Tender

We are seeking a dedicated Roll Tender to assist in pressroom operations by preparing and managing rolls of newsprint for daily production. This role is crucial in ensuring smooth press operations, maintaining equipment, and upholding safety and quality standards in a fast-paced environment. There may be some overtime, and/or weekend work depending on workload!

Key Responsibilities:

Assist in preparing the press for daily newspaper printing. Inspect and prepare rolls of newsprint, ensuring they are free of defects. Set up rolls for splicing on Megtec reels and follow standard operating procedures. Support operators with plate hanging, pagination checks, and job quality control. Perform maintenance on reels and FWL systems as needed. Maintain a clean and organized pressroom. Calculate required rolls to prevent production interruptions. Follow all safety procedures, including the use of required protective gear. Handle tools and repair equipment as necessary. Perform manual tasks such as standing, bending, climbing, and lifting up to 60 lbs. Work with small parts and maintain good vision, hearing, and color perception.

Requirements & Qualifications:

Education:

High school diploma or vocational schooling (graphic arts courses preferred).

Experience:

1 year of related experience in a pressroom preferred.

Skills:

Basic mechanical aptitude and knowledge of printing press operations. Ability to follow instructions, troubleshoot, and make adjustments as needed. Willingness to work flexible shifts, including days, evenings, and weekends.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand, walk, and engage in physical tasks for extended periods. Comfortable working in environments with noise, ink spray, chemicals, and heavy machinery. Required use of steel-toed shoes, hearing protection, and other safety gear.

Working Conditions:

Pressroom environment affected by outdoor temperatures. High noise levels during press operation (hearing protection required). Exposure to ink, dust, chemicals, and moving mechanical equipment.
