Exempt (Engineer) / Non-Exempt (Technician) Job Summary The Materials Lab Engineer / Materials Lab Technician is responsible for the preparation, testing, and analysis of asphalt and concrete materials within FORTA's advanced materials laboratory. This role supports research and development initiatives, product validation, and performance troubleshooting by generating reliable, high-quality test data that directly informs engineering decisions and real-world applications. Essential Duties and Responsibilities § Prepare and test asphalt and concrete specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures and in compliance with ASTM and AASHTO standards § Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment § Record, analyze, and report laboratory data accurately and consistently § Support engineering teams in evaluating material performance and field-related challenges § Assist in research and development initiatives tied to product innovation and performance validation § Maintain laboratory organization, safety standards, and quality control procedures § Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, operations, and technical teams Qualifications §
Engineer:
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, or related field; 1-3+ years of relevant experience preferred §
Technician:
Associate degree, technical training, or equivalent experience; 0-2+ years of relevant experience preferred Skills and Competencies § Strong attention to detail and data accuracy § Hands-on mechanical aptitude with laboratory equipment § Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills § Ability to follow technical procedures and standards § Effective communication and documentation skills § Ability to work independently and collaboratively Working Environment § Laboratory-based role with active material handling § Exposure to asphalt, concrete, and associated lab equipment § Requires standing, lifting, and hands-on work throughout the day Additional Information The position is based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and requires candidates to reside in or be willing to relocate to the area, with relocation assistance available. The role operates primarily in a laboratory environment involving active material handling, exposure to asphalt and concrete materials, and the use of specialized testing equipment. Candidates should be prepared for a hands-on setting that includes standing, lifting, and working directly with materials throughout the day.
