Our in-house tool & die capabilities provide full design, simulation, and build services for complex projects. Stamping Hot and conventional stamping (100-800 tons) Automotive & industrial metals Multi-location facilities for high-volume production Laser Cutting Multi-axis laser systems for prototyping & production Flat and 3D part cutting, trimming, and hole piercing Versatile with various metals and thicknesses Welding & Assembly Spot welding for Ultra High Strength Steel & press-hardened parts Highly automated robotic cells for precision and efficiency Focused on quality, speed, and cost reduction Knowledge of measuring equipment such as verniers, micrometers, height gauges, etc. Experience working with press parts.
Position Summary:
The CMM/Metallurgy Technician is responsible for performing dimensional inspection using coordinate measuring machines and conducting metallurgical analysis to ensure materials and components meet GNS North America quality and engineering standards. This role supports production, validation, and failure analysis processes. This position supports manufacturing operations on an off-shift schedule (nights, and weekends). Candidates must be able to work non-day shifts and support production requirements outside of standard business hours. Key Responsibilities CMM / Dimensional Inspection (Experience required) Operate and program CMM equipment (e.g., PC-DMIS) Perform first article inspections (FAI), in-process, and final inspections Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and CAD models Perform layouts of fixtures and parts using the CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machines) and other devices. Troubleshoot CMMs and recognize problems. Create and modify CMM inspection programs for precision machined components, assemblies and tooling. Develop and validate inspection programs Analyze measurement data and generate detailed reports Calibrate and maintain measurement equipment (CMM, micrometers, calipers, gauges) Metallurgical Analysis (must be willing to learn) Prepare samples (cutting, mounting, polishing, etching) Perform microstructural analysis using optical and/or electron microscopes Conduct hardness testing (e.g., Rockwell, Vickers) Analyze material properties such as grain structure, phase composition, and heat treatment effects Support failure analysis investigations (fractures, wear, corrosion) Ensure compliance with automotive material standards (e.g., ASTM International, SAE International) Quality & Process Support Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality teams Support APQP, PPAP, and root cause analysis activities Document inspection and metallurgical results in quality systems Assist with PPAP documentation. Prepare dimensional reports for PPAP and prototype submissions accurately and on a timely manner as required. Assist in continuous improvement initiatives Interpret and report dimensional results. Assist Quality Department with Blueprint Analysis, GD&T. Assist with scheduled calibrations of gages and fixtures. Ensure all parts being measured are identified in a complete and correct fashion and all data are kept up to date as required and create various reports and manage data. quality standards Technical Skills Strong understanding of GD&T and blueprint reading Familiarity with automotive standards and quality systems Experience with lab equipment (microscopes, hardness testers, sectioning tools) Data analysis and reporting skills (Excel, SPC software) This role requires cross-functional capability; candidates hired primarily for CMM responsibilities are expected to learn and perform metallurgical analysis duties as part of their core responsibilities Provide layout support to the tool room for inspection of tryout samples, die sections, or reverse engineering. Assist with Optical Comparator inspection. Enter the layouts results onto the correct forms on the computer. Soft Skills Attention to detail and accuracy Problem-solving and analytical thinking Communication skills for cross-functional teamwork Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment Contribute to the continuous improvement initiatives on all aspect of the job. Work Environment Combination of shop floor and laboratory settings May involve shift work in high-volume automotive production Ensure responsible areas are clean and hazard free at all times. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and Experience High school diploma or GED preferred Certification in CMM operation Certificate of training in GD&T preferred. Hands-on experience with CMM operation and programming Experience in metallurgical lab techniques and analysis 3+ years of experience operating and programming CMM equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge Strong mathematical skills. Knowledge of CMM software, GD&T, and datum structures. Work Environments Work performed in a shop environment and regularly exposed to dust, odors, oil, fumes and noise. GNS has established process, procedures, and protective equipment to reduce or eliminate exposures to these hazards and full compliance is a requirement of the job. Requires working in non-air-conditioned variable temperature factory setting. Employees are exposed to extreme heat and/or cold and other work place hazards.
