Job Title:
CMT Technician (Engineering Technician - Construction Materials Testing) Job Description The CMT Technician will perform field observations, inspections, and tests on construction materials including soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt. This role supports quality control on active construction sites by verifying that materials and placement meet project specifications and accepted engineering standards. The technician documents findings clearly and accurately, communicates regularly with site personnel and project teams, and prepares timely reports based on field data. Responsibilities Perform field observations and inspections on active construction projects to verify compliance with project specifications and accepted engineering practices. Conduct testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt placement in the field using appropriate methods and equipment. Inspect reinforcing steel (rebar) placement and other structural elements to confirm conformance with plans and standards. Document all observations, inspections, and test results accurately and thoroughly in accordance with engineering and project requirements. Communicate daily with site contractors, other technicians, and project managers to coordinate testing activities and share findings. Prepare and submit clear and organized daily, weekly, and monthly reports summarizing field data, test results, and observations. Identify potential issues or nonconformances in materials or construction practices and promptly report them to the appropriate project personnel. Maintain testing equipment and tools in good working condition and follow established procedures and safety practices while on site. Follow all relevant codes, standards, and guidelines related to construction materials testing and documentation. Essential Skills Hands-on experience performing construction materials testing on soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt in the field. Strong knowledge of field observation and inspection practices for construction projects. Ability to perform and interpret concrete testing procedures in accordance with ACI standards. Experience conducting soils testing and understanding soil behavior and compaction requirements. Ability to inspect and verify proper placement of reinforcing steel (rebar). Proficiency in preparing accurate, detailed, and well-organized technical reports and field documentation. Effective verbal communication skills to interact professionally with site contractors, other technicians, and project managers. Ability to work independently in the field while following established procedures and engineering practices. ACI Certification relevant to concrete testing and inspection. Additional Skills & Qualifications Additional experience with asphalt testing and inspection in a construction environment. Familiarity with general construction processes and site practices. Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to testing and documentation. Ability to manage multiple assignments and reporting deadlines, including daily, weekly, and monthly submissions. Basic proficiency with standard office and reporting software for preparing and submitting test reports. Work Environment This role is primarily field-based on active construction sites, involving regular outdoor work and exposure to varying weather conditions. The technician uses construction materials testing equipment for soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt, as well as standard tools for measurement and inspection. Work hours follow project needs and may include extended days depending on construction schedules. The position requires appropriate field attire suitable for construction sites, along with the use of required safety gear such as hard hats, safety vests, safety glasses, and protective footwear. The technician collaborates closely with contractors, other technicians, and project managers in a fast-paced, quality-focused environment where accurate testing and timely reporting are critical. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Raleigh, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $25.00/hr.
