Description of Work Please note that all positions close at 12:00 AM on the posted closing date. You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date. This posting is for an Engineering Technician II position in the Salisbury Construction Unit. The position will support higher level technicians and engineers in administering construction contracts via construction inspection and, if needed, stakeout. Position may serve as lead project inspector on small to intermediate-sized projects as needed. Position requires the performance of standardized and non-standardized tests of various materials for acceptance in accordance with contract documents and incorporated specifications and requirements. Employee may assist in supervision of lower-level technicians and CEI personnel, as well as help in the coordination of work assignments. Employee must be proficient in record keeping. Employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as necessary and as operations require. Daily duties will include, but are not limited to, writing diaries and reports on project operations, completing various material reports, documenting pay records, performing construction calculations, and computer/iPad entry of reports/data. Additional Expectations:
Ability to establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public. Should be able to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner, both orally and in writing. Ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgement. Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, weather extremes, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing. Must be able to lift 50 lb. Knowledge and skill in the use of Microsoft Office suite products, such as Word, Excel, and Outlook, is required. Experience with iPads/tablets, HiCAMS, and SharePlus/SharePoint is highly preferred. Advanced working knowledge of mathematical functions is required. Must be able to work nights and/or weekends as required by project workload/staffing with fluctuating hours, if needs be on any assigned project within the limits of Division 9. Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety-toed shoes required. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range:
NC09 / $41,206 - $72,113 Management prefers applicants with the following: Experience analyzing and interpreting highway construction plans. Experience maintaining/completing standard records, reports and correspondence. Experience with mathematical functions (i.e. algebra, geometry, and trigonometry). Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments. Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, iPad and software. Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
