Technician IV -
Met Lab Job Summary:
The Technician IV - Met Lab performs a wide range of highly complex metallurgical testing and sample preparation activities in support of quality, production, and customer requirements. This role operates specialized laboratory equipment to conduct mechanical, metallographic, magnetic, and related testing while ensuring accuracy and compliance with established standards. In addition to advanced technical responsibilities, this position provides guidance and coordination for daily lab operations, supports training of less experienced technicians, and contributes to continuous improvement and quality initiatives.
Primary Responsibilities:
Prepare samples for metallurgical analysis and examination Perform complex mechanical tests (e.g., hardness, tension, tensile, resistivity) using specialized equipment Conduct metallographic and magnetic testing using etchants, polishing equipment, and advanced lab tools Accurately collect, record, and interpret test data Provide recommendations to supervision based on test results and analysis Support and coordinate day-to-day activities within the Met Lab Train and guide less senior technicians; communicate departmental goals and expectations Facilitate workflow and movement of materials into and out of the lab Ensure completion of required testing and training activities Participate in quality audits as a Met Lab representative Maintain compliance with safety, quality, and operational standards Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned
Additional Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent experience as determined by management Minimum of 5 years of relevant metallurgical or laboratory experience Ability to operate advanced metallurgical and laboratory equipment Strong understanding of mechanical, metallographic, and magnetic testing processes Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex situations and recommend improvements Ability to organize, prioritize, and execute tasks effectively in a production environment Capable of working independently with minimal supervision Effective verbal and written communication skills Team-oriented mindset with ability to facilitate collaboration and resolve conflicts Ability to perform highly complex assignments Role may support multiple functional areas including Mechanical Testing, Preparation, Metallography, Magnetics, or Heat Treating Anticipates customer needs and recommends process improvements Provides guidance and coordination across team activities Acts as a team facilitator and informal leader when needed Demonstrates accountability, adaptability, and strong decision-making skills Carpenter Technology Company offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package including life, medical, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, disability coverage, 401k with company contributions as well as many other options to employees.
