Job Title:
Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Technician The Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Technician performs soil and concrete testing on industrial and retail construction projects in the Abilene area. This role focuses on field testing activities such as slump tests, pressure tests, soil density and gradation testing, while maintaining clear communication with site superintendents and internal team members. The position suits someone who enjoys hands-on work outdoors, has strong attention to detail, and can apply basic math and writing skills to document test results accurately. Responsibilities Perform field tests on soil and concrete materials for industrial and retail construction projects. Conduct slump tests, pressure tests, soil density tests, gradation tests, compaction tests, and other standard construction materials tests as required. Use nuclear density and other testing equipment (such as Troxler or similar devices) to perform accurate density testing on soils and related materials. Document test results clearly and accurately using basic writing and math skills, ensuring all data is complete and legible. Communicate testing progress, issues, and results with site superintendents and internal team members to support project schedules and testing requirements. Load, unload, and transport testing equipment and materials using pickup trucks and other provided vehicles or tools. Work safely in outdoor environments and follow all site safety procedures and guidelines while performing tests. Adapt to varying daily start times and schedules based on project needs, including early morning shifts and overtime. Essential Skills At least 3 years of hands-on experience performing density testing in a construction or field testing environment. Practical experience with soil testing, concrete testing, and compaction testing on active construction sites. Ability to perform basic math calculations to record and verify test measurements and results. Ability to perform basic writing tasks to document test procedures, results, and observations clearly. Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions while performing physical, hands-on tasks. Experience working in field technician or labor-intensive roles that require adaptability to different schedules and overtime. Strong verbal communication skills to interact with site superintendents and internal team members. Ability to safely handle, operate, load, and unload testing equipment and related tools. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience as a Construction Materials Technician (CMT) or similar field testing role. Familiarity with ACI (American Concrete Institute) standards and practices for concrete testing. Exposure to NICET-related testing practices or standards for construction materials testing. Experience using nuclear density gauges (such as Troxler or similar equipment) for soil and materials testing. Interest in ongoing learning and development in construction materials testing and related certifications, even if not currently certified. Experience in construction, field work, or labor roles that involve working with soil, water, and concrete. Work Environment This role is primarily field-based and involves working outside in the elements on active industrial and retail construction sites in the Abilene area. The technician regularly loads and unloads testing equipment from pickup trucks and transports it around the job site, which requires physical stamina and comfort with hands-on work. Start times vary depending on project schedules and can range with an average workweek of 40 to 60 hours, including overtime as needed. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Abilene, TX. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $25.00/hr.
