Location:
Detroit, MI Job Summary•We are seeking a skilled and experienced Boiler Operator to join our facilities team at a school in Detroit, MI. Under moderate supervision, the Boiler Operator will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of high•and low-pressure boilers and related mechanical systems. This role ensures optimal heating, cooling, and ventilation across the school campus while complying with all city, state, and industry regulations. This position reports to the Facilities Supervisor and requires the ability to respond to emergency maintenance situations as needed, including weekends, holidays, and evening shifts. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Operate, monitor, and maintain high•and low-pressure boilers, chillers, pumps, compressors, radiators, and other HVAC/mechanical systems. Check, maintain, and repair radiators throughout the building to ensure optimal heating performance in all areas. Conduct water testing and chemical treatment for boiler and cooling tower systems. Maintain and troubleshoot Building Automation Systems (BAS), ensuring proper equipment control and functionality. Perform preventive maintenance on boilers, chillers, steam systems, and other power plant equipment. Maintain detailed logs and records of operations, inspections, repairs, and fuel/water usage. Inspect, repair, and adjust pumps, condensers, expansion tanks, control valves, motors, fans, and heat exchangers. Conduct boiler teardown inspections and ensure compliance with local and state safety codes. Respond to emergency maintenance calls and equipment failures. Ensure compliance with City of Detroit and State of Michigan regulations for boiler operation and maintenance. Participate in campus-wide maintenance activities, including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical system repairs. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent; completion of a vocational/trade school or associate degree program preferred. Minimum four (4) years of experience operating heating plants, powerhouses, or boiler rooms with high-pressure steam and/or High-Temperature Hot Water (HTHW) systems. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and safety guidelines. Working knowledge of hydronic heat systems, cooling towers, industrial automation controls, and water chemical treatment. Experience troubleshooting boiler management and flame monitor safety controls (e.g., Fireye E-110 or newer). Strong understanding of electrical, plumbing, and HVAC system repairs. Must be physically able to tolerate high heat and noise levels and perform duties requiring manual dexterity and lifting.
