Job Summary Plan, layout and perform a variety of machining and assembly operations to fabricate tooling, jigs and fixtures, meeting exacting tolerances and specifications. May also sharpen and grind various types of cutters and form tools.
Essential Functions:
Fabricate tools for new and existing jobs by: Reading blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. Selecting, aligning, and securing holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders and shapers. Calculating and setting controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media. Starting and observing machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required. Verifying conformance of finished work piece to specifications. Repair damaged tools and gages by: Diagnosing tooling out of tolerance specifications. Prototyping and production Fitting and assembling parts into complete assembly. Verifying dimensions and alignment of assembly. Installing machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines and equipment, and test operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance. Developing specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated. Designing, making prototypes, and fabricates tools and gauges. Running production parts when necessary. Responsible for supporting the Schafer Business Process by: Maintaining and continuously improving productivity of assigned machines. Measuring, marking, and scribing dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining. Continuously looking at tool life and new tooling to cut costs on tools. Reducing downtime of machines setups Maintaining the 6S program in assigned area. Organizes tool room. Performing maintenance, repairs, and general housekeeping of tool room machinery. Troubleshooting various production machines. Conferring with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems. Following and ISO and Schafer procedures. Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the company by: Channeling problems and/or complaints to appropriate person for resolution. Supporting all Schafer policies and procedures. Reporting to Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed. Providing input and assistance with the implementation of quality improvements. Resolving problems. Performing other job-related duties as required. Helping evaluate job applicant's knowledge for the cell prior to Schafer hiring. Passing along vital information in the logbook for subsequent shifts. Training new personnel in the operation of assigned machines. Assisting and/or training in other areas as needed. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities 1. Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 50 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time on cement or other hard surfaces, etc. 2. Demonstrates the verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms and take messages in a legible, accurate manner. 3. Four-year apprenticeship. 4. Five plus years of experience. 5. Must be able to communicate in English. 6. Ability to use a computer. 7. Associate's degree (A.A.), or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school. 8. Six months to one year of experience and/or training. 9. Able to read and interpret blueprints. 10. Knowledge of
GD&T. 11.
Can operate lathes, vertical mills, grinders, gages and saws. 12. Metallurgy knowledge. 13. Familiar with design, part layout, and process planning. 14. Must be able to communicate in English.
Working Conditions:
Air conditioned/heated manufacturing facility with possible exposure to noise; dust; fumes; physical, chemical, and biohazards; solvents, oils, and detergents. This job is to be performed at the designated facility 100% of the time unless directed otherwise by manager/supervisor.
