TOOL MAKER JOB SUMMARY
Build tooling (and related prototypes) according to specifications for application in company owned assembly plant operations. Operate hand tools and power tools, general assembly of equipment, fabricate and/or modify details. Troubleshoot and identify problems with equipment and tooling. Duties are performed with oversight and prioritization by the department manager.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Read specifications and blueprints, etc. to be used for machining details or assembling tooling. Set up and operate variety of machines (lathes, Bridgeport, grinder, etc.) and shop equipment to cut, shape, and finish materials to specified dimensions. Fit, align, and assemble tooling/machine components, and measure tooling/machine components for conformance to specifications, using precision measuring and checking instruments Repair or rework tools. Debug tooling and equipment. Interface with customers and vendors as necessary in a professional manner. Communicate with Shop Manager as to progress of build project. May draw sketches and prepare detailed instructions for fabricating or machining to be performed by other team members. Engage in continuous improvement suggestions and participate in initiatives to improve productivity and process efficiency. Maintain safe operations and a clean work area by adhering to safety and housekeeping procedures/regulations. Clean work area daily at the end of shift. Complete all necessary forms, documents and reports within a timely fashion as required. Assist in maintaining predetermined inventory levels of components, supplies, materials, etc., in the build shop. All other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or GED equivalent Years of experience: 2+ years of prototype, tooling, or machine building experience in the automotive industry. Any pneumatic or electrical experience is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
General understanding of assembly processes and machining. High level of analytical ability and problem-solving skills where problems are unusual and difficult. "Let's try it" Personality - Intuitively connects ideas to ideas. Computer literacy. Basic skills in using Microsoft Office Windows, Word, Excel, etc. Must be able to fluently read blueprints and assemble tooling to print. Experience with AutoCAD or SolidWorks is a plus.
Experienced with operating power tools:
hand drill, angle grinder, chop saw, horizontal band saw, drill press, Bridgeport, mill, lathe. Skilled at machining and general assembly of equipment. MIG and/or TIG welding experience a plus. Must be able to markup existing prints to reflect "as built" conditions. Must be able to machine parts from a print. Must be able to trouble shoot newly built tools, debug problems and resolve issues with limited direction. Must be able to work alone with minimal direction, while working responsibly, safely, and efficiently. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Strong verbal and written skills necessary to communicate intricate job-related information and respond to questions from team members and customers. Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines. Ability to use personal protective equipment and follow safety guidelines. Ability to work well in a team environment and have a positive attitude. Must have a valid driver's license and personal vehicle.
