Responsibilities and Duties Analyzes a variety of specifications, sets up and operates machine tools, fits and assembles parts to fabricate or repair cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges or machinist's hand tools. Read and analyze blueprints, specifications, sketches or tool description and plans sequence of operations. Assemble, disassemble, repair and/or modify tools and dies using a hydraulic press. Applies knowledge of tool design, shop mathematics, metal properties, layouts, machining, and assembly procedures. Measures, marks and scribes metal stock to layout work pieces for machining. Sets up and operates machine tools, such as lathe, milling machine, ID and OD grinders to machine parts to specifications. Verify angles and radii of machined parts to specification using an optical comparator. Lift, position, and secure machined parts on surface plates or worktable using hoists, vises, v-blocks, or angle plates. Verify dimensions, alignment, and clearances of finished parts using measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, ID bore gauges, height gauges, and gauge blocks. Polish surfaces of parts or tools using diamond compound, abrasive stones, files, emery cloths, and Dumore grinders. Examines standard tools and modifies tools as required. Develops specifications from general descriptions and draws or sketches tools to be fabricated, using drafting tools. Communicate with tool room manager and tool room Area/Shift leaders. Instruct other plant personnel about tool room concerns. Assist in the implementation and improvement of effective preventive maintenance programs for tooling equipment. Carry out assigned work-loads as directed by shift/area leaders.
