Tool and Die Maker

PURPOSE:

Provide support to production by building and/or repairing/rebuilding dies.

JOB DUTIES

Locate, drill, tap, and mill various parts using digital readouts on vertical mill reliable to within .001" from drawings supplied Have an understanding of the contact of leaving grind stock on parts that are to be heat-treated. This includes how much grind stock to leave to achieve the dimension called for on the part print that does not specify anything other than the final dimension required Must be able to reliably and accurately mill pockets and shapes that do not necessarily begin or end outside of the part Use a dial indicator and edge finder to locate positions on pre-existing or worn parts for modification or re-machining Use vertical mill and carbide drills to drill through hardened materials Reliably produce results when milling with carbide end mills in hardened materials Basic lathe work, including turning of shafts with shoulders and simple "V" threads Dress surface grinding wheels with a radius ending at an angle tangent to the radius ending at an angle tangent to the radius Precision grind flat surfaces angled to each other and make them meet at a clean corner Accurately dress complex forms on a surface grinding wheel that may include multiple radii and angles Lap fitting of round holes for precision press fits and draft in die buttons is required in both hardened and soft materials Completely build a new die or rebuild an existing die from a complete set of drawings supplied by the Engineering Department Must be able to resurface an existing production die. This includes the sharpening of both the upper and lower units, making any and all adjustments to the timing of the die through the reduction of the shut height of the die from sharpening Have the ability to write complex programs for the wire EDM when given complete drawings with ordinate dimensions to work from Must have the ability to rebuild dies without formal engineering drawing, as well as document the repairs so the change(s) can be recorded on the drawings Have the ability to train new apprentices in all areas of the job

250" travel with a wide anvil similar to a Starrett Model #196) Pocket calculator with trigonometric functions scriber for layout work (carbide tip recommended) Machinists' square with protractor head and 12" scale Small inspection type dial indicator with interchangeable tips (Starrett Model #711 or equivalent) Precision angle plate (Matching pair is recommended) 5" sine bar Hardened and ground mill vise hold-downs Hardened and ground precision parallels Adjustable parallels Set of die jacks Precision machinists' square Vee blocks (Matched set is required) 2. Must have a Journeyman's card in the Tool & Die Maker Classification or six years of experience in Tool & Die Making 3. If employee does not have a Journeyman's card in the Tool & Die Maker Classification, he or she would be required to successfully complete the requirements of an Apprentice in the Apprenticeship Program in order to obtain Journeyman's card

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee will work around moving mechanical parts and machinery in the factory. The noise level in the work environment is loud in the manufacturing area.
