Job Description
Job Title:
Die Repair Technician Job Description This role participates in a structured Die Repair Training Program designed to develop the skills needed to set up, load, repair, and maintain stamping dies to precise tolerance standards. Over approximately two years, you receive scheduled classroom instruction and hands-on experience while working under supervision on increasingly complex die work. You perform die setups, changeovers, troubleshooting, and repairs, and you complete formal assessments every 1,000 hours to measure progress and readiness for more advanced responsibilities. Candidates with equivalent practical or vocational experience may progress through the program at an accelerated pace. Responsibilities Review stamped parts and stamped strip to identify defects and quality issues. Trace problems beyond the initial visual defect through the strip and associated tooling to determine the root cause within the die. Evaluate the impact of proposed changes or component replacements on other elements within the tooling system. Remove and replace tooling components such as pierce punches, slot punches, guide pins, serration blocks, forming stations, closing stations, swaging stations, flattening stations, and stamps. Measure removed and replacement components to determine correct shim requirements and achieve specified dimensions and tolerances. Use precision inspection instruments—including comparators, micrometers, ring and plug gauges, and other measuring tools—to verify part tolerances and confirm compliance with specifications. Retrieve dies from storage, remove existing dies from the press, and install new dies safely and accurately. Adjust feed mechanisms to accommodate stock size and required die lead for each job. Change de-reelers to support different material formats, such as pancake or spool configurations. Position oil lines correctly and attach milling or swaging devices when required by the operation. Perform die changeovers in the press to switch tooling for different part numbers as production needs change. Operate machines and equipment associated with die repair and setup while following established procedures. Troubleshoot mechanical and process issues related to die performance and machine operation. Participate fully in the formal Die Repair Training Program, including classroom instruction and hands-on training. Complete scheduled training courses and assessments every 1,000 hours throughout the two-year program. Take part in committee reviews or progress evaluations as part of the structured development process. Perform related duties as assigned to support production, tooling, and maintenance needs. Follow documented policies and procedures in the Employee Handbook and Local Work Rules. Adhere to the company Code of Conduct while on company property and maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area. Essential Skills High school diploma or equivalent. At least 1 year of manufacturing machine operating experience. Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working with mechanical equipment. Ability to operate production machinery safely and efficiently. Ability to perform machine setup and changeovers. Willingness to participate in company-provided classroom instruction as part of the Die Technician Training Program. Ability to successfully complete scheduled training courses and assessments every 1,000 hours during the approximately two-year program. Experience using hand tools and precision measuring devices such as micrometers, gauges, and comparators. Basic troubleshooting skills for mechanical and process issues. Ability to work on day or night shift schedules as needed. Additional Skills & Qualifications Prior experience in mechanical, manufacturing, machining, tool and die, or related industrial roles. Exposure to stamping, metalworking, or high-volume production environments. Hands-on or vocational training that aligns with die repair, machining, or toolroom work. Experience with grinding, machining, and mechanical troubleshooting. Familiarity with metal stamping presses and associated tooling. Ability to interpret measurements, tolerances, and basic technical specifications. Capability to progress through a structured training program and take on increasingly complex die work over time. Why Work Here? You work in a clean, climate-controlled facility that supports focus, comfort, and safety. The organization offers a structured training program that invests in your long-term growth and provides clear milestones for advancement. You receive a competitive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, as well as short-term disability, long-term disability, and employee assistance program support. Paid time off is generous and increases with tenure, starting at 80 hours for 0-4 years, 120 hours for 5-9 years, and up to 200 hours at 25+ years, along with 10 paid holidays. A 401(k) plan with a 100% match on the first 2% and a 50% match on the next 2% supports your retirement goals. A sign-on bonus is available, paid in installments at 90 and 180 days, and night shift team members receive an additional shift differential, recognizing the value of flexible scheduling and around-the-clock operations. Work Environment You work in a clean, climate-controlled metal stamping facility that emphasizes safety, organization, and precision. The shop includes a toolroom with manual machines, a wire EDM machine, and a variety of tools used for die maintenance and repair. The production area is dedicated to metal stamping, and while it remains clean and well maintained, the noise level can be high due to stamping presses, making consistent use of hearing protection essential. Typical schedules follow a four-day workweek, with day shift running Monday through Thursday from 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and night shift running Monday through Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., with a shift differential offered for night work. The dress code includes clean jeans or work pants, composite safety shoes, safety glasses, and appropriate hearing protection, reflecting a professional industrial environment focused on both comfort and safety.
