Full-time Job Description:
The Wastewater Operator-in-Training (OIT) assists with the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of wastewater treatment systems while receiving training required to become a certified wastewater operator. The position supports plant operations and equipment maintenance to ensure safe and efficient treatment of wastewater in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Essential Functions:
Plant Operations Assist with operation of wastewater treatment systems including pumps, motors, blowers, aeration systems, and chemical feed systems Monitor treatment processes and make adjustments under supervision of a certified operator Record plant data including flow rates, pressures, chemical usage, and system performance Monitor alarms and respond to operational issues Sampling and Laboratory Testing Collect wastewater samples for laboratory testing Perform routine testing including pH, dissolved oxygen, chlorine residual, and total suspended solids Maintain accurate meter readings and calibration logs Equipment Maintenance Assist with preventative maintenance of plant equipment Inspect pumps, valves, motors, and piping Clean clarifiers, filters, screens, and tanks Report mechanical issues to maintenance staff or supervisors Compliance and Documentation Maintain operational logs required for regulatory compliance Assist with regulatory reporting and inspections Follow all safety procedures and plant operating policies
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED Must obtain Alabama Wastewater Operator Grade II certification with 18 months. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work in a standing position for the majority of the shift. Must be able to pass a background check and drug test. Must possess a valid driver license and a driving record suitable for insurability. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and work around mechanical equipment
Preferred Qualifications:
Mechanical or electrical aptitude Experience in utilities, environmental services, or industrial operations Basic knowledge of pumps, motors, and process systems
