Job Description
Supervises the garbage collection section or the yard waste/bulky items collection section by performing the following duties. The list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Other duties may be assigned. Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position.
Monitors and supervises work:
visits route sites daily, checking to ensure that collectors perform tasks correctly; trouble shoots problems along the route.Responds to requests or complaints:
receives complaints or requests from Director; investigates, solves problem if possible.Performs administrative tasks:
approves leave; completes accident/near miss investigations and associated documents; completes appropriate Workers Compensation documents for on the job injuries; completes performance appraisals; commends and/or recommends disciplinary actions as necessary.Assigns personnel:
makes route assignments as needed; makes daily relief assignments to ensure all routes (garbage or brush) are completed daily. Monitors and supervises maintenance and cleaning of vehicles and equipment : completes daily maintenance and repair service order forms. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required. High school diploma or equivalent and five years experience with sanitation collection, which includes at least one-year supervisory experience; or a combination of education and experience that provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. A Class "B" commercial driver's license and good driving record are required and must be maintained throughout employment. Otherwise qualified applicants who do not possess the required license may be hired conditioned on their obtaining the required license within one year of hire. The complexity, guidelines, supervisory controls, and supervision responsibilities described below are representative of this position.SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The supervisor makes assignments by defining objectives, priorities, and deadlines; and assists employee with unusual situations that do not have clear precedents. The employee plans and carries out the successive steps and handles problems and deviations in the work assignment in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted practices in the occupation. Completed work is usually evaluated for technical soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements. The methods used in arriving at the end results are not usually reviewed in detail.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
Directly supervises 14-24 or more employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; approving leave; appraising performance; commending or disciplining employees; addressing employee complaints and resolving problems.
