Job Description
Under direct or general supervision, performs a variety of skilled duties involved in the installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of control instrumentation, electrical, electronic, radio, and telemetry equipment and systems of the City's wastewater treatment facilities. The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of the position's essential duties. They are descriptive, not limiting.
Essential Duties:
Installs, repairs, maintains, troubleshoots, and operates electrical, electronic, control instrumentation systems and devices including VFDs, electrical motors, power circuits, control circuits, computer systems including PLC, SCADA, radio, and communication equipment, co-generation facilities, systems, and equipment.

Technician I:
Graduation from high school or GED; AND Completion of a formal apprenticeship or its equivalent in the electrical, electronics, or instrumentation fields; AND One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in operating, maintaining, installing, and repairing, a variety of electrical, electronic, and control systems common to field or heavy industrial process plants. Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license
Technician II:
In addition to the requirements of
Technician I:
Three (3) years of increasingly responsible journey-level work experience in operating, maintaining, installing, and repairing a variety of electrical, electronic, and control systems common to field or heavy industrial process plants OR two (2) years of experience equivalent to Electrical & Instrumentation Technician with the City of Bakersfield.
Licenses, Certificates or Special Requirements:
Possession of a first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificates during the initial 12 months of employment and continued maintenance of valid certificates; Possession of a California 40-hour
HAZWOPER
Certificate during the initial 12 months of employment and continued maintenance of a valid certificate. July 9, 2026 (Tentative) An appraisal will be made of the applicant's experience, education, training, certification, knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal qualifications for the position. A minimum passing score of 70% is required.
NOTE:
Admission to the Examination may be limited to those applicants who demonstrate the best combination of qualifications. Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed admittance to the Examination.
