Job Description

THE POSITION
Wastewater Mechanical Specialist is the journey level class in the Wastewater Mechanical series. Incumbents perform the more complex assignments in the repair, service, maintenance, fabrication, and installation of Wastewater Treatment Plant equipment and machinery; including but not limited to overhauling pumps, and gearboxes; and diagnosing hydraulic and pneumatic problems and making necessary repairs. Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Maintains and repairs a variety of equipment, machinery, and control systems in the treatment plants to assure efficient plant operations.
  • Overhauls pumps, motors, gearboxes and other equipment.
  • Diagnoses pumping, drive, hydraulic, and pneumatic problems and makes necessary repairs; maintains records of work performed.
  • Installs or replaces equipment and machinery; participates in major plant installations and overhauls.
  • Services machinery and equipment through preventive maintenance by performing periodic lubrication, adjustment, cleaning, and inspections for worn parts.
Performs related duties as required. One vacancy currently exists in the Department of Public Utilities, Wastewater Management Division. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.
THE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.
Education:
Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent GED completion.
Experience:
Four (4) years of experience performing mechanical maintenance in a municipal or industrial facility with emphasis on fluid pumping and mechanical drive systems.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is required at the time of application and continued maintenance throughout the entire term of employment in this classification. Depending upon assignment, possession of a valid Commercial Class B California Driver's License may be required at the time of application and continued maintenance throughout the entire term of employment in this classification. Valid California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) Mechanical Technologist Grade II certification is desirable
THE SELECTION PROCESS
The examination process may consist of the following: Written Examination
  • 100 % The written examination is designed to assess a candidate's knowledge in the following areas: knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the mechanical, electrical and welding trades; general construction maintenance and repair work practices and terminology; safety; maintenance and repair of tools and equipment; tool identification and interpersonal & public relations.
Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list. The written examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of June 29, 2026.
VETERAN'S PREFERENCE
Candidates applying for veteran's preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period. Evidence must be presented to indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the military service. Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit proof of honorable service for every examination for which veteran's preference credit is requested. Qualified veterans who pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final score.
