Job Description

Definition Under direct supervision, assists in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system. Distinguishing Characteristics The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator-In-Training is distinguished from the Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator by the level of responsibility, complexity of duties, and the required state wastewater plant operation certification. The Operator-In-Training will work under the immediate supervision of a Grade II or higher Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator. Promotion to Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator requires certification from the California State Water Resources Control Board (State Certification). ________________________________________ Essential Functions Maintain detailed records of operations, maintenance, and treatment plant processes. Inspect plant equipment and processes to ensure optimal operation. Monitor and read meters and gauges. Conduct laboratory analyses to assess water quality. Assist in evaluating test data and generating reports to ensure proper operation, identify deficiencies, and recommend corrective actions. Assist certified operators with emergency operations. Perform preventive maintenance and repairs for treatment plant and sewer collection system equipment. Operate vehicles and equipment in compliance with safety regulations. Maintain treatment plant systems and equipment. Access sewer manholes, lift stations, and treatment facilities. Perform heavy physical labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds regularly and 100 pounds occasionally, and removing/replacing manhole covers weighing up to 205 pounds with assistance. Clean treatment plant structures and assist in major repairs. Conduct routine maintenance, cleaning, and video inspections of sewer lines. Disassemble and clean sewer pumps, and assist with repairs. Carry out extermination programs to control pests such as cockroaches and rats. Respond to emergency sewer stoppage calls and work with the public. Complete sewer maintenance, overflow, and emergency reports. Clean and maintain office and grounds. ________________________________________ Other Functions Perform other job-related duties as assigned. ________________________________________ Work Schedule 40-hour workweek, with periodic weekend and holiday shifts. Additional hours may occasionally be required. Shift work may be implemented in the future. ________________________________________ Employment Requirements High School diploma or GED. 2 years of experience in electronics, instrumentation, electrical systems, or completion of relevant coursework (e.g., electrical or wastewater) at the high school or college level. ________________________________________ Licenses Required Within 3 months of hire: Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator-In-Training certification (California State Water Resources Control Board). Within 24 months of hire: Wastewater Treatment Plant Grade I Operator certification (California State Water Resources Control Board). Valid California Class "C" driver's license (without restrictions) and insurability. ________________________________________ Additional Requirements Knowledge of basic mathematics and science, hand tools, small power tools, plumbing methods, and equipment. Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills. Preferably, experience or knowledge of wastewater treatment or pumping systems. Ability to maintain accurate records, follow both written and oral instructions, and apply technical manuals. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues. ________________________________________
