Description The Town of Bennett is hiring a Water/Wastewater Utilities Operator I or II. The Water/Wastewater Utilities Operator I/II operates light and heavy equipment and performs routine, semi-skilled to skilled work in the maintenance and construction of water, sewer, and storm drainage systems. Work involves both independent assignments and team collaboration to ensure proper functioning of the Town's water and wastewater utilities.
Water/Wastewater Utilities Operator I :
Works under supervision while developing proficiency in system operations and maintenance. Must have or be able to obtain in the first year, a Class I water and wastewater distribution and collections license and/or an Operator D Water Treatment or Wastewater Treatment license.Water/Wastewater Utilities Operator II :
Works independently and may assist with training others. Must have a Class II water and wastewater distribution and collections license and/or an Operator C Water Treatment or Wastewater Treatment license.Salary Range:
Water/Wastewater Utilities Operator I :
$53,000 - $69,800Water/Wastewater Utilities Operator II :
$62,100 - $71,900- Applications due by February 1, 2026.
Both Levels:
- Service, inspect, and operate assigned equipment; maintain service and use records.
- Report needed mechanical adjustments, repairs, and upcoming maintenance projects.
- Perform or assist with equipment repair work and manual operations in water and sewer systems; ensure safety at job sites.
- Operate, monitor, control, test, and troubleshoot the water/wastewater treatment plant.
- Maintain and repair collection and distribution systems, including drainage structures, wastewater collection lines, pumps, and motors.
- Assist with or perform installation and repair of water mains, water meters, isolation valves, and pressure-regulating valves.
- Excavate, lay, and align pipe; install valves, laterals, hydrants, and meters.
- Maintain pump stations, lift stations, and related equipment.
- Locate leaks, repair water line breaks, and perform water and sewer connection taps.
- Inspect and clear obstructions from storm drains.
- Respond to citizen inquiries and complaints regarding the water system.
- Clean and maintain work areas, tools, equipment, vehicles, and grounds.
- Serve on-call as required and respond to after-hours emergencies per department and Town policies.
- Support special events such as Town Cleanup Day and Bennett Days.
- Conduct water sampling and Colorado State compliance items. Water/Wastewater Operator II - in addition to above:
- Perform more complex maintenance, repair, and construction tasks with minimal supervision.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to Operator I and seasonal staff.
- Monitor system performance and recommend operational improvements.
- Lead or assist with advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, and technical tasks.
Knowledge and Abilities :
Knowledge of:
- Techniques, practices and operation of water and sewer utilities.
- Use and operation of relevant office equipment.
- Local government services and administration.
- Customer service needs and the delivery of those services.
Ability to:
- Ability to documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and plans and specifications.
- Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid and logical conclusions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors and the public.
- Understand cultural differences and create inclusive working environments.
Education or Formal Training :
Water/Wastewater Utilities Operator I :
High school diploma or GED; minimum one year of manual labor or mechanical maintenance and repair experience.Water/Wastewater Utilities Operator II :
High school diploma or GED; minimum two years of experience with municipal utilities or equivalent combination of education, licensing, and experience.Certificates and Licenses:
Valid Colorado's Driver's License.Utilities Certifications:
Water/Wastewater Utilities Operator I:
Class I Distribution and Collections license and/or Operator D Water/Wastewater Treatment license (or ability to obtain within one year).Water/Wastewater Utilities Operator II:
Class II Distribution and Collections license and/or Operator C Water/Wastewater Treatment license.Work Environment:
- General environment for a utilities department, which includes outdoor work in inclement weather and around hazardous chemicals.
- Regular operation of heavy machinery and manual labor.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- May work varying shifts, overtime, and on-call rotations.
