Job Description

LEE COUNTY, GEORGIA
Classification Specification Water Wastewater Operator (5545)
FLSA:
Non-Exempt Purpose of Classification:
The purpose of this classification is to operate, control, and maintain water and wastewater equipment and plants for the County's water utility, including monitoring and analyzing processing conditions and taking corrective actions to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
Essential Functions:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Inspects, maintains, and repairs wells, lift stations, and wastewater treatment systems: monitors and ensures proper operation and function of equipment; cleans lift stations; performs troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and repairs; and stocks chemicals. Operates and maintains water distribution systems and related equipment: monitors and ensures compliance with water treatment and discharge standards; conducts quality control testing; analyzes results; and adjusts processes as needed. Monitors chemical feeds and distribution, flow rates, and related treatment processes: maintains appropriate chemical levels; adjusts system controls; adds, adjusts and replaces chemicals in the plant's systems and components; and maintains related documentation. Reads meters, gauges and dials: records readings, chemical levels, wastewater properties and statistical data; and prepares and maintains related logs, records and reports. Installs and/or repairs plant equipment and water and sewer services and mains and related equipment: installs and replaces water meters/backflows, chlorine injectors, chlorinators, fluoride pumps, booster pumps; replaces curb stops; performs sewer cleanouts; troubleshoots and resolves equipment and service problems and concerns. Lee County, Georgia Water Wastewater Operator Performs customer services duties: receives, responds to, and/or creates service orders; communicates with customers regarding water and sewer inquiries or issues; investigates complaints; provides information; answers questions; and resolves problems. Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: prepares, completes, receives, reviews, processes, forwards or retains, as appropriate, various forms, reports, correspondence, service orders, codes, regulations, policies, procedures, manuals, reference materials, logs, service orders, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports and audits; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records. Communicates with supervisor, other employees, other utility companies, contractors, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Operates and utilizes various tools and equipment as necessary to complete essential functions: operates and maintains backhoe, excavator, utility locate equipment, and other power or motorized equipment.; operate a personal computer, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and other system software; and operates general office equipment. Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by one year of experience in water and wastewater operations and equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific Licenses or Certifications Required:
Must possess and maintain Georgia driver's license; must possess and maintain Georgia Class III Wastewater and Class IV Water Operator licenses.

Sensory Requirements:
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
