Wastewater Treatment Plant, City of Madison
REPORTS TO
Shawn Wood, Public Works Department Head and Larry Stephens, Utilities Treatment Supervisor
ENTRY SALARY
$43,500.16; hourly rate $20.91
JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for operating and monitoring chemical and mechanical systems pertinent to wastewater treatment and control at a wastewater treatment plant. An incumbent in this classification may be designated a Class III, Class II or Class I Operator with attainment of the applicable State of Georgia license.
MAJOR DUTIES
  • Monitors control panels and adjusts valves, lubricates equipment, and adjusts gates to regulate the flow of wastewater; maintains operational records and meter and gauge readings.
  • Collects sewage samples and conducts chemical analysis; adjusts the operation of the plant based on results of laboratory tests as needed.
  • Mixes, adds, and maintains chemical addition systems; adjusts chemical feed rates as necessary to maintain operations within specified parameters.
  • Maintains effluent quality to meet all regulatory permit requirements; performs required testing, operates chemical analysis equipment, and prepares effluent reports.
  • Advises the Wastewater Supervisor of the status of wastewater treatment equipment and systems.
  • Tends to and operates a variety of machines and equipment necessary for wastewater treatment operations.
  • Cleans, maintains, and repairs plant equipment; performs routine and preventative maintenance and maintains supply and parts inventory.
  • Handles, accumulates, and coordinates sludge and hazardous waste material storage and disposal in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Develops and administers safe work permits; adheres to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Learns, monitors, and ensures compliance with all applicable OSHA and EPA requirements related to wastewater treatment processes.
  • Assists in the operations of the laboratory as assigned.
  • Performs janitorial and grounds maintenance duties.
  • May be required to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Serves as a key contributor in process control operations, including support to related systems such as paint and plating processes, as applicable.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possession of High School diploma or GED certificate.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia.
  • Possession of a State of Georgia Wastewater Operator License Class II or higher, with the ability to obtain Class I within one (1) year.
