Job Description
Job Summary We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Water Superintendent to lead and oversee the operations of municipal water and wastewater treatment facilities. This vital role involves managing daily plant activities, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and maintaining the integrity of water distribution systems. The Water Superintendent will coordinate maintenance, supervise staff, and implement strategies to optimize water quality and system efficiency. Responsibilities Supervise the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants, wastewater facilities, and distribution systems to ensure optimal performance and regulatory compliance. Oversee the installation, repair, and maintenance of equipment including pumps, valves, tanks, and control systems such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and distributed control systems (DCS). Manage data collection processes related to water quality parameters, system performance metrics, and operational logs to support analysis and reporting. Conduct inspections of heavy equipment operation, plumbing systems, and mechanical components; perform or coordinate necessary repairs and preventative maintenance. Lead construction projects involving heavy lifting, equipment installation, or infrastructure upgrades; ensure safety standards are maintained throughout all activities. Analyze operational data to identify inefficiencies or issues; develop solutions utilizing basic math skills and technical analysis techniques. Ensure proper training of staff on equipment repair, safety procedures, water treatment processes—including wastewater treatment—and emergency response protocols. Maintain detailed records of operations, maintenance activities, incident reports, and compliance documentation in accordance with regulatory agencies. Collaborate with team members to improve processes related to water quality control, data collection accuracy, and system reliability. Experience Proven experience managing municipal or industrial water treatment or wastewater facilities with a strong understanding of water treatment processes including filtration, disinfection, and chemical dosing. Hands-on knowledge of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCS), and other automation technologies used in water systems. Demonstrated ability to operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently in construction or maintenance projects involving tanks, pumps, or piping infrastructure. Strong mechanical knowledge with skills in equipment repair—including pumps, valves, plumbing fixtures—and performing routine maintenance tasks. Experience in data collection methods for monitoring water quality parameters such as pH levels, turbidity, residual chlorine levels, etc., along with analysis skills for troubleshooting issues. Ability to perform heavy lifting safely while working in various environmental conditions; familiarity with safety standards related to heavy equipment operation is essential. Basic math proficiency for calculations related to flow rates, chemical dosages, system capacity assessments; attention to detail for accurate record-keeping.
