POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs maintenance tasks and laboratory analysis associated with the operation of the wastewater treatment plant and collection system. Performs other duties as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  • Operates and inspects various pumps and services them as needed
  • Washes and scrubs clarifiers
  • Performs groundskeeping duties
  • Performs laboratory analysis to determine treatment plant performance
  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment
  • Participates in snow removal operations
  • Checks and maintains lift stations daily
  • Mows and maintains levee system
  • Participates in sludge disposal program
  • Samples industrial wastes to determine compliance with pre-treatment agreements
  • Checks and maintains collection system
  • Sprays mosquitoes when needed
  • Performs weekend duties for both water and wastewater minimum standards, in a rotation with other employees
  • Works in a team environment and assists, as needed, in water, streets, cemetery, and parks operations on occasion
  • Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to demonstrate the ability to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation:
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used in wastewater treatment plants and collection systems
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of plant operations
  • Ability to interpret the operating status of plant equipment
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to plant and collection system operations
  • Ability to use standard mechanical tools necessary to make repairs
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and maps
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work involves regular standing, walking, and occasional crouching, crawling, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying heavy objects weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds. Requires extensive use of hands, fingers, legs, and arms in grasping objects, operating equipment, and using hand and power tools.
ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY
Work is performed in conditions subject to temperature extremes and exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and mechanical hazards. The position involves risks associated with moving machinery, slippery surfaces, and other occupational hazards that could result in serious injury.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Education/Training:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Work Experience:
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Must obtain Iowa DNR Wastewater Grade 1 Certification within two (2) years
  • Additional Iowa DNR wastewater or water grade level certifications will be coordinated with the City Administrator and Department Head
  • Must obtain an Iowa Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B, within six (6) months
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This position may require call-back to work outside normal hours and may involve extended or irregular working hours. City of Red Oak, March 2026
Pay:
$21.00 - $22.00 per hour
