DIRECTOR OF WASTEWATER TREATMENT JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Wastewater Treatment oversees the management, technical execution, and business development efforts within the Water Resources Service Area, primarily dealing with wastewater treatment operations. Reporting to the Vice President of Technical Services, the Director ensures that projects are performed efficiently, staff are properly utilized, and revenue targets are met. This role requires high-level strategic planning, technical expertise, and personnel leadership to maintain quality service and operational success.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Support company sales and marketing efforts to secure work from new prospects including bidding, scoping, budgeting, proposal development, and providing technical expertise Identify work opportunities and work to secure contracts through direct communication, networking, and referrals Assist and direct staff to do the same Develop marketing materials, maintain updated resumes, prepare project descriptions, and contribute to technical presentations Ensure adherence to the August Mack Safety Program and promote a culture of compliance on all Water Resources projects Assemble and manage project teams while providing technical expertise for services including Wastewater and drinking water treatment operations Sustainability consulting (system audits, water reuse, energy reduction) Sustainable water resource management Lead staff in effectively managing projects including financial performance, budgeting, recognizing the need for change orders, selecting subcontractors, directing invoices, maintaining project files, closing out jobs, and reviewing project financial performance Oversee project portfolio and provide final review of project submittals and correspondence Manage and mentor Water Resources staff to achieve established performance objectives related to safety, sales, and project execution Conduct personnel performance evaluations and implement corrective actions as necessary
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline, or significant relevant experience may be substituted for educational requirement
Experience:
Minimum of five years in industrial or municipal water or wastewater treatment. Experience in business development and personnel management preferred
Certifications:
Must have Level IV or Class D (Indiana) Wastewater Treatment License or equivalent from other state Additional requirements: Valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and physically capable of operating the vehicles safely
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Water resource management, regulatory compliance, sustainability strategies, and environmental safety Chemical and biological wastewater treatment, including troubleshooting problem systems Personnel leadership, client relationship management, technical mentoring, and training
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to work outdoors, access equipment in difficult environments, and lift 50+ pounds. Travel as needed for site visits, client meetings, and project oversight
JOB CONTEXT 30
% office (controlled environment), 70% field/site visit travel (environmental job hazards) This classification requires travel to various client locations. Travel typically involves day trips within the state or neighboring states, resulting in longer workdays; and may include extended and/or further travel, resulting in multiple days and overnights. Long-distance drives and air travel may be required. Shift work and holiday work may be required on an as needed and sometimes ongoing basis.
