Job Description

Wastewater Laboratory TechnicianJob Overview We are seeking a detail-oriented Wastewater Laboratory Technician to join our environmental team. You will be responsible for performing technical laboratory testing and field sampling to ensure our wastewater treatment processes meet all local, state (IDEM), and federal (EPA) regulatory requirements. This role is critical to maintaining public health and ensuring the ecological safety of our local waterways.
Primary Responsibilities Sampling & Analysis:
Collect daily influent, effluent, and process control samples. Perform chemical and biological analyses including BOD, TSS, ammonia, phosphorus, pH, and chlorine residuals.
Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure all testing aligns with NPDES permit requirements and maintain rigorous documentation for state and federal audits.
Equipment Management:
Calibrate, clean, and maintain sensitive laboratory instrumentation (spectrophotometers, pH meters, dissolved oxygen probes, etc.).
Data Management:
Record and interpret analytical data; enter results into Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) or spreadsheets to track plant performance trends.
Quality Control:
Implement and follow Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) programs to ensure the accuracy and reliability of all lab results.
Safety & EHS:
Adhere to strictly defined OSHA safety protocols , including the proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals and biological samples.
Required Qualifications Education:
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in standard laboratory techniques and basic mathematical calculations for data analysis.
Certifications:
Ability to obtain or current possession of a state-specific Wastewater Operator or Laboratory Technician certification (e.g., Class I or II) is highly preferred. The ability to obtain a class 1 wastewater license within 1 year.
Physical Ability:
Must be able to work in various weather conditions for field sampling and be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Skills Microbiology Expertise:
Proficiency in microscopic examination of activated sludge to identify filamentous organisms and protozoa, which is vital for process control.
Regulatory Knowledge:
Deep understanding of EPA Methodologies and State Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) reporting standards. Prior experience in a municipal wastewater setting or an industrial environmental lab.
Pay:
$25.00 - $30.00 per hour
