Position Summary :
Performs skilled work in the operation of water purification treatment and pumping plant. Makes repairs and adjustments to equipment as required.
Tasks :
Works on a shift plus standby rotation. Must be able to report to the plant within 30 minutes of being called. Inspect, operate, and perform maintenance on motors, pumps, meters, chemical feeders, and related equipment. Observes pressure and flow of water in the distribution system from telemetering data; maintains steady pressure. Operate and adjust controls on equipment to purify and clarify water, process or dispose of wash water, and generate power. Calculates dosage and add chemicals to system in accordance with prescribed standards of laboratory tests. Backwash filters. Operate, oil, and adjust pumps and machinery. Conducts visual inspections of working apparatus and grounds performing preventive maintenance on equipment. Performs custodial work in the cleaning and maintenance of equipment and facilities. Receives and handles complaints. Unloads chemical and fills hoppers and changes chemical tanks. Makes mechanical repairs and assists and supervises maintenance programs. Makes routine chemical analyses of samples. Can be called out to plant and for main breaks. Calibrates chemical feeders; changes chemical tanks. Makes routine chemical analyses of samples. Assists Superintendent with reports and special projects. Prepares State reports. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, superiors, other agencies, and the public. Deals with the public in a manner that positively promotes the image of the City and handles complaints tactfully. All employees of the City of Winfield are subject to immediate callout when an emergency, disaster or breach of homeland security occurs. Such call to respond and assist may involve those activities to his/her regular job responsibilities and incorporate other non-job-related duties as necessary and required of an employee. An employee's response to these matters may require the working of unusual, long hours over an extended period with infrequent breaks or rest periods. Experience and Education:
Any combination of education and experience eq2uivalent to graduation from high school with coursework in chemistry and biology Valid Kansas Driver's License.
Operator I:
One year of plant and mechanical experience, preferred Must obtain Class I Water Plant Operator Certification within one year of appointment and Class II within three years of appointment.
Operator II:
Three years of experience with plant or pump operations and maintenance, including two years as a Water Plant Operator I. Possession of a Class IV Water Plant Operator's certificate.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform moderate physical work and ability to lift 50 pounds and to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, climb, push, pull and perform similar body movements. Possesses hand/eye coordination adequate to perform lab work and equipment maintenance duties. Ability to talk and hear in person, by telephone and two-way radio. Ability to see and read instructions and gauges, and prepare logs and reports.
