Non-exempt DescriptionThe Charter Township of Union is seeking an energetic, and team-oriented individual to join its Public Services Department team as a full-time Assistant Water Operator. This position is under the supervision of the Chief Water Operator. An individual in this position is responsible for assisting in all aspects of water plant and system maintenance associated with water system filtration processes, cross-connection inspections, water sampling chemical evaluation, and responds to all water system emergencies. Also functions as a construction inspector for water and sewer projects and maintains and programs SCADA systems/monitoring devices. Assists in maintaining chemical and supply inventories pertaining to water treatment and filtration systems and regularly performs field work. Assumes responsibility for the water plant in the absence of the Chief Water Operator. Requirements Education equivalent to completion of twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by additional vocational training in the building/water management trades. Three or more years of experience in water system operation and/or water system distribution maintenance and repair. Possess a State of Michigan S-3 and D-3 water certifications. Thorough knowledge of the machines, equipment, materials, safety precautions, and operating practices of modern water distribution systems and related facilities. Thorough knowledge of the chemical and physical processes involved in the preparation of drinking water. Considerable knowledge of the public health and safety requirements and regulations regarding the operation of a municipal water system. Skill in the inspection and maintenance of mechanical equipment, pumps, and related facilities. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports on plant operations and cross connections. Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with contractors, other governmental agencies, industrial/commercial contacts, and the public. Skill in the use of office equipment and technology, including word processing and data management software and the ability to master new technologies (such as SCADA and GIS software). Ability to respond to emergency water and sanitary sewer on-call situations, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Valid driver's license and safe driving record required.
