Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE
To perform a variety of more difficult and responsible Water and Sewer Distribution construction and maintenance activities involving the safe and efficient operation of heavy duty and other automotive and power-driven equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a major assignment, to operate any power-driven equipment, which may include a pay loader, snowplow, street sweeper, street excavator, backhoe, or other designated equipment. To perform the more responsible and more difficult work in street maintenance. To install and maintain water and sewer mains, and associated fittings. To be available for "on call" assignments on a rotating basis with other member of the Water/Sewer Department. To perform required concrete work for the construction and maintenance of public works systems. Replace, repair, and read water meters, and record readings, also flow check meters for accuracy and code compliance. To comply with all safety standards and procedures. To perform routine maintenance and inspection on vehicles and equipment. Perform related work as required. Perform work of lower rated employees. Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent. Experience equivalent gained to performing for one year as an Equipment Operator.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of various types of heavy-duty equipment and vehicles. Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in water, sewer and street system maintenance and construction.
LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION
Must have valid State of Michigan driver's license and good driving record. Must obtain a State of Michigan Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and tanker endorsement within nine (9) months of hire. Minimum of S-4 certification from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy required within 24 months of commencement of assignment. S-2 certification is preferred.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
The tools and equipment used in this position include, but is not limited to, motorized vehicles and equipment including backhoe, loader, dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, street sweeper, street roller, manlift, tamper, plate compacter, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, radio, phone, ditch witch.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to lift equipment and materials up to 80 lbs. May be required to lift heavier items with the assistance of coworkers or usage of available equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The City of South Haven is a drug-free workplace. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to inclement weather conditions while working outdoors. The employee may get wet or be exposed to raw sewage during the course of their work. When on the scene of emergency repairs or construction sites, incumbent may be exposed to definite health or accident hazards.
