Job Description

This position is responsible for assisting the Superintendent in the scheduling and supervision of operational personnel at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. In addition, this position schedules, supervises, and participates in the operation, repair, and maintenance of plant equipment and maintains records as required. This position also troubleshoots equipment problems and assists in the development and implementation of improved plant maintenance practices. Essential Job Functions Schedules and supervises the work efforts of operational employees assigned to the Wastewater Treatment Plant and pumping stations. Directs the work efforts of employees engaged in specific projects, as planned and outlined by the Superintendent. Prepares estimates and obtains materials for completing repair projects and oversees installation of new or rebuilt machinery and equipment. Oversees preventive maintenance programs and continuously inspects the plant to ensure adequate maintenance practices. Analyzes equipment failure to determine cause and corrective action and supervises repair requirements. Maintains maintenance and repair records on all equipment and maintains other records as directed. Institutes and monitors computer-aided equipment maintenance programs. Orders and maintains spare parts. Maintains flexibility and availability as may be required to respond to emergency situations that may occur after hours, on weekends or holidays, including participation in an on-call rotation (which is every third week). Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to read and write to perform job functions at a level normally acquired through completion of high school or equivalent. At least 3 years' experience in wastewater treatment plant operations and equipment repair. At least 2 years' experience in a supervisory role. Working knowledge of the chemical and physical processes involved in wastewater operations is important. Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare routine schedules for plant operations. Ability to effectively direct, supervise, and maintain satisfactory working relationships with assigned personnel. Ability to develop long-term plans and programs and assist administration in matters of policy. Ability to handle emergency situations as they may occur while on call.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required; additional technical training in wastewater treatment or related field preferred. Possession of a State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources Class C Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification is preferred, or the ability to obtain the required certification within one (1) year of appointment. Valid State of Michigan driver s license.
