Job Description

General Statement of Duties Performs skilled work in the operation of medium to heavy construction equipment for field crews; performs various semi-skilled and skilled crew laboring tasks as required. Distinguishing Features of the Class An employee in this class participates in the work of a crew engaged in digging and back filling ditches, laying and calking cast iron, concrete, or terracotta pipe for water and sewer service, making service connections, moving and setting water meters, valves, and hydrants. Employee also participates in repairing streets and sidewalks and constructing new sidewalks. Work involves emergency call-back service rotation, as well as working in confined spaces. Work is performed under general supervision of the Assistant Public Works Director. Duties and Responsibilities Work
  • Operates tractor and ditching equipment to excavate ditches in water/sewer maintenance and construction
  • Operates a backhoe to fill ditches, and remove dirt, rubbish, and other materials in specific areas
  • Operates backhoe to excavate underground electrical cable
  • Services construction equipment with gas, oil, and grease
  • May drive a pickup or other truck to transport personnel and materials to and from work sites
  • Operates construction equipment in close proximity to other utilities
  • Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of equipment
  • Performs various other equipment operation duties in the repair and installation of piping for water and sewer utilities
  • Drives a dump truck to haul and distribute dirt, sand, and gravel
  • Drives a variety of crew vehicles and trucks in the specific area of responsibility
  • Performs a variety of general maintenance and construction tasks as required in crew operations
  • Prepares simple reports and records

  • Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment
  • Good knowledge of the methods, equipment, and materials used in pipeline construction work
  • Good knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safe practices and procedures necessary to protect self, fellow employees, and the general public
  • Skilled in the operation of heavy equipment in a variety of construction tasks
  • Ability to service and maintain heavy equipment
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employee Must be able to perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Work generally involves continuous field work requiring light to heavy physical activity. Must be able to perform work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee is subject to working in inside and outside environments including extreme hot and cold weather and work hazards including loud noise, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, poor ventilation, and oils. Work is also subject to the OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens Graduation from high school or GED equivalency. Some responsible experience in the operation of medium to heavy construction equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid North Carolina commercial driver's license (CDL B)
  • Certification by State of NC in Water Distribution (Grade C)

From $18.35 per hour
