Job Description

Water Treatment Plant Operator The Town of Mount Olive is seeking a qualified Water Treatment Plant and Well System Operator to ensure the safe and efficient treatment of drinking water in compliance with federal and state regulations. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Meter Reading Read assigned routes accurately and on time using handheld or AMR/AMI devices. Verify anomalies and perform re-reads as needed. Inspect meter boxes and report hazards or tampering Service Orders Complete turn-on/turn-off orders for new service, non-payment, or seasonal changes. Investigate leaks, perform pressure checks, and basic troubleshooting. Install or replace meters/endpoints and make minor repairs. Water Treatment Plant & Well System Monitor and operate water treatment plant and well systems to maintain water quality standards. Record daily readings for pumps, chemical feed systems, and storage tanks. Perform routine maintenance, chemical adjustments, and backwashing filters. Collect water samples for testing and assist with compliance reporting. Customer Service & Documentation Communicate professionally with customers in the field. Record work details, photos, and notes in the work order system. Escalate complex issues to supervisors. Safety & Compliance Follow all safety policies and use proper PPE. Operate Town vehicles and tools safely. Comply with state and federal water quality regulations. Team Support Assist with line locates, flushing, and valve/hydrant exercises. Participate in on-call rotation for emergencies. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Formal training in water treatment is preferred. C-Well Water Treatment Certificate (or ability to obtain within 12 months). Valid North Carolina driver's license. Skills & Abilities Knowledge of water treatment operations and safety protocols. Ability to operate and troubleshoot systems independently. Proficient in reading gauges, meters, and system diagrams. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Willingness to learn new technologies and processes. Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks. Visual acuity for inspections and monitoring. Exposure to indoor/outdoor environments and hazardous conditions. May require use of PPE including respirators.
