Water Treatment Plant Operator

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

This work involves responsibility for the performance of routine work for the efficient operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with established routines and procedures. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate employees in the performance of their assigned duties. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Operates pumps, valves, motors, and related machinery and equipment; Performs maintenance work, inspects and repairs machinery and equipment; Records readings from meters, gauges and scales; Regulates and adjusts chemical feeders and takes samples of water for testing; Performs required water testing for control of plant operations; Washes filter beds, settling basins and other equipment; Instructs trainees and supervises subordinate employees; Keeps plant log and related records and prepares reports on plant operations; May perform custodial duties in connection with maintenance of buildings and grounds.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the practices used and equipment required in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants; Working knowledge of the principles and application of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as they relate to water purification; Skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment; Ability to read, understand and record data from gauges, scales and meters; Ability to make routine laboratory and field tests; Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Mechanical aptitude; Dependability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a Water Treatment Plant Certification issued under the provisions of the New York State Sanitary Code in a grade determined appropriate by the appointing authority.

NOTE:

May be required to possess a valid driver's license at time of appointment, and to maintain such license throughout the tenure of employment.
