Wastewater Maintenance Technician

Newberry Township is seeking a Wastewater Maintenance Technician to assist with the inspection, cleaning, repair, and maintenance of the Township's sanitary sewer system, pump stations, and related equipment. This position includes operating jet/vac trucks and other utility equipment, supporting pump station operations, and participating in an on-call rotation for emergency and after-hours response. This is a hands-on, outdoor role ideal for someone with mechanical aptitude who is interested in long-term career growth, training, and advancement in municipal wastewater operations. Key Responsibilities Clean and maintain sewer mains and laterals using jet/vac trucks, hand tools, and related equipment Perform routine inspections of pump stations, including motors, floats, alarms, and generators Assist with wastewater sampling, field testing, and preventive maintenance Set up and maintain safe work zones using cones, signage, and traffic control devices Operate Township vehicles, trucks, and equipment safely Respond to emergencies such as sewer backups, alarm activations, and severe weather events Document completed work and inspections in the Township's maintenance system Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED Valid Pennsylvania Class C driver's license at time of hire Ability to obtain a PA CDL Class B with air brake and tanker (N) endorsement within 12 months CDL training and testing costs are covered by the Township Required Certifications (Provided by Employer) Confined Space Entry (OSHA 1910.146) within 12 months PA DEP Wastewater Collections Operator - Class E, Subclass 4 within 24 months PA DEP Wastewater Operator - Class B, Subclass 1 within 48 months Skills & Competencies Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to safely use hand and power tools Ability to read maps, plans, and basic schematics Basic computer skills for work orders, reporting, and email Good judgment and situational awareness in field environments Reliable team player with strong communication skills Physical & Work Environment Requirements Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and climbing in and out of manholes Ability to occasionally lift up to 75 pounds Work performed in confined spaces, traffic areas, noisy environments, and around wastewater and chemicals Ability to wear required PPE, including respirator equipment (fit testing provided) Schedule Full-time (40 hours per week, day shift) Participation in an on-call rotation (typically one week at a time) Overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed for emergencies or weather events Compensation & Benefits Hourly rate: $24.00 - $30.00 , depending on experience Health, dental, vision, and life insurance Pension plan and 457(b) retirement plan Paid time off and paid holidays Township-paid CDL training and wastewater certification support Ongoing safety training and professional development How to Apply Apply through Indeed or submit an application directly to Newberry Township.
