Job Description

Position Summary:
The water Treatment Operator I (Operator-in-Training) performs entry-level operational, maintenance, monitoring, and laboratory duties associated with the treatment and distribution of potable water. Under direct supervision, this position learns to operate water treatment equipment and systems, perform routine inspections, collect samples, maintain records, and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. The Operator I is expected to actively pursue required certifications and develop the knowledge and skills necessary to advance to higher operator classifications.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Learn to assist with the operation of water treatment plant equipment, including pumps, motors, valves, filters, chemical feed systems, and related facilities
  • Monitor treatment processes and equipment performance through plant control systems, instrumentation, and visual inspections.
  • Collect water samples and perform routine laboratory analyses in accordance with established procedures
  • Record operational data, meter readings, chemical usage, maintenance activities, and laboratory results
  • Assist with adjusting treatment processes under the direction of certified operators to maintain water quality standards
  • Perform routine inspections of treatment facilities, storage tanks, pumpstations, and distribution system components
  • Assist with preventive maintenance and minor repairs on plant equipment and facilities
  • Respond to alarms, equipment malfunctions, and operational issues under supervision
  • Maintain accurate operational logs and reports
  • Follow all safety procedures, regulations, and departmental policies
  • Maintain housekeeping standards Throughout the treatment facility
  • Participate in emergency response activities, including after-hours callouts when required
  • Attend training programs and complete coursework necessary for operator certification
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities:
  • Basic principles of water treatment and distribution preferred
  • Basic mathematics, including algebra
  • Read and interpret gauges, meters, charts, manuals, and technical documents
  • Maintain accurate records and reports
  • Effective communication, written and verbal
  • Effective team working
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to obtain State license/certifications
  • Basic Computer proficiency
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to walk, stand, climb, bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to distinguish colors for laboratory and operational purposes
Working Conditions:
  • Exposure to chemicals including disinfectants, coagulants, and other treatment additives
  • Exposure to moving mechanical equipment and varying environmental conditions
  • Rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call assignments
  • Emergency operations and conditions
Pay:
$20.00 per hour
