Job Description
JOB The City of South Milwaukee Water/Wastewater Utility is seeking a pro who enjoys physical, outdoor work, and has experience or aptitude in construction-type work. Great team attitude is a must, current CDL is a plus. Must reside within fifteen miles of city limits. Monday through Friday daytime hours, plus emergency call-ins as needed. Members of the Road Crew are referred to below as Distribution and Collections Technicians.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision and direction of the Distribution and Collections Manager and the Water/Wastewater Superintendent, the Distribution and Collections Technician performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of the city's water supply, treatment, distribution, and collection facilities and systems . This position qualifies as emergency personnel as permitted by Wis. Stat. Sec. 66.0502.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reads water meters and registers. Maintains records of meter installations, repairs, and tests. Maintains a variety of records and reports. Taps water mains for service connections. Cleans, locates, and exercise gate valves and curb boxes. Excavates, installs, and repairs water mains, hydrants, water services, sewer mains, manholes, and catch basins. Cleans, straightens, adjusts, and repairs valves, curb boxes, manholes, and catch basins. Flushes, winterizes, and tests fire hydrants. Notifies customers of service interruptions. Conducts customer service calls, investigates and informs customers accordingly. Assists in various phases of treatment plant and grounds maintenance such as servicing of equipment and grass cutting. Notifies Diggers Hotline of excavations so other facility locations can be marked. Assists in the field locating underground utilities, and in the operation and repair of all appurtenances of the municipal water system and sanitary/storm water collection system. During an assigned rotational "stand-by" week, receives notification of water distribution system, sanitary/storm sewer collection system, sewer backups, and lift/relief station emergencies requiring investigation and evaluates the situation promptly and accordingly. Collects water samples from distribution/collection system for laboratory analysis. May be called upon to operate plant equipment in emergencies. May be cross trained in water treatment and sewage plant operations. Performs road repair. Performs custodial duties as necessary to keep facilities in a good appearance. Assists other city departments as assigned by the Collection/Distribution Manager, Facilities Manager, or Superintendent. Uses sewer jet and root cutters to clean and clear sewer lines of debris and roots using vacuum equipment and hand tools. Operates sewer televising equipment. Locates and reports defects. Investigates, cleans, and maintains lift stations, relief stations, and siphon chambers; inspects and repairs pumps and tanks. Operates snow plows, salter, and snow blowers; shovels snow; drives and services trucks; operates backhoe and other equipment. Cuts grass, shovels snow, paints. Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance. Performs other related duties consistent with the function of the classification; other duties as assigned.
Peripheral Duties:
Drives truck and assists in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, gravel and sand. Operates light and medium-sized construction and power equipment, such as a backhoe/loader.

Compressors, pumps, pneumatic hammers and drills, picks, shovels, common hand tools, sewer rods, root cutters, motor driven cleaning equipment, sewer televising equipment, flexible cables, snow plows, snow blowers, trucks and service trucks, lawn mower, backhoe/loader, fork lift, saws, pumps, generators, detection devices, telephone, and general small equipment.
