Job Description
Job Overview The Railcar Repair Laborer/Welder/fabricator is responsible for inspecting, repairing, rebuilding, fabricating, and maintaining freight railcars in accordance with industry standards, customer requirements, and regulatory guidelines. This position performs structural repairs, welding, fabrication, and general labor tasks to ensure railcars are safe and serviceable for operation. Duties Inspect railcars for structural damage, wear, and defects. Perform repairs on freight railcars, including hopper cars, box cars, gondolas, and covered hoppers. Remove, replace, and repair railcar components such as side sheets, end sheets, center sills, draft systems, brake components, ladders, handholds, and safety appliances. Operate welding equipment using SMAW, MIG, and other approved welding processes. Fabricate metal parts and assemblies from blueprints, drawings, specifications, or templates. Use oxy-fuel cutting torches, plasma cutters, grinders, and other fabrication tools. Perform fitting, layout, measuring, cutting, and assembly of fabricated components. Assist with sandblasting and painting operations when required. Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, man lifts, and other material-handling equipment. Complete repairs in compliance with applicable industry standards, including AAR and FRA requirements. Maintain a clean and safe work environment and follow all company safety procedures. Accurately complete inspection reports, repair records, and work orders. Work effectively as part of a team to meet production and quality goals. Qualifications High school diploma or
GED MUST BE ABLE TO PASS A DRUG TEST.
Previous railcar repair, welding, fabrication, construction, or industrial maintenance experience preferred. Ability to read and interpret repair procedures and technical drawings prefered. Knowledge of welding and metal fabrication techniques preferred. Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments. Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety. Ability to work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions. Physical Requirements Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift more with assistance. Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods. Work at heights, in confined spaces, and around moving equipment. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators when necessary. Preferred Skills (not required, can be learned on the job if needed) AAR railcar repair experience Railcar welding certifications Knowledge of freight car components and repair procedures. Experience with structural steel fabrication and heavy industrial welding. Forklift, crane, or heavy equipment operation experience. Work Environment Industrial railcar repair facility, rail yard, or shop setting. Exposure to noise, dust, welding fumes, vibration, and changing weather conditions. Overtime work may be requested based on production needs. This position plays a critical role in ensuring freight railcars are repaired, fabricated, and maintained to meet safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
Pay:
$12.00 - $20.00 per hour
