Ship Repair Welder /
Fabricator Location:
North Portland -
Port of Portland Pay:
$31-$38/hour (DOE) Position Overview We are seeking skilled Ship Repair Welders/Fabricators to support critical repair and modernization work on naval and commercial vessels . This is a hands-on role working alongside experienced trades professionals to perform high-strength structural welding, fitting, and fabrication that directly supports vessel safety and reliability. Key Responsibilities Perform structural flux core welding (FCAW) in 2G, 3G, and 4G positions on ship components including bulkheads, foundations, and stiffeners Prepare materials for welding (grinding, beveling, edge prep) to ensure proper fit and weld integrity Read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, schematics, and specifications Operate welding equipment, cutting torches, and grinders safely and efficiently Perform hot work in compliance with shipyard safety standards Work in confined spaces such as tanks and voids while following all safety procedures Assist with fabrication, repair, and installation of metal structures onboard vessels Collaborate with supervisors and multi-trade crews to meet project deadlines Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment Ensure all work meets quality standards and compliance requirements (Navy/ABS) Required Skills & Experience 1st Class structural welding experience in a shipyard or marine environment Strong experience with FCAW multi-pass welding (2G, 3G, 4G) Ability to perform high-strength structural welds on ship components Proficient in reading blueprints, weld procedures, and specifications Experience working with cutting torches, grinders, and welding equipment Comfortable working in confined or restricted spaces Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety Preferred Qualifications Experience working on MARAD or commercial vessels Familiarity with Navy and ABS standards TWIC card (preferred, not required) Ability to work effectively within a team-based shipyard environment Why This Opportunity Work on large-scale ship repair and modernization projects Join a safety-focused, professional team that values craftsmanship Opportunity for project extension beyond the initial 4-5 week assignment Be part of work that directly impacts mission-critical marine operations
Work Environment & Schedule Location:
Active shipyard and onboard vessels (Port of Portland)
Schedule:
Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30
PM Overtime:
Up to 10-hour days as needed Work includes confined spaces, structural steel environments, and hot work conditions Strong emphasis on safety, teamwork, and maintaining a clean work area Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Portland, OR. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $31.00 - $38.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
