Gulf Copper Position Summary:
The Plate Welder I (1st Class) is responsible for performing high-quality welding on steel plates and structural components in accordance with project specifications, safety standards, and industry codes. This position requires advanced welding skills, precision, and the ability to work independently on complex fabrication and repair tasks in a shipyard or industrial environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform FCAW, SMAW, and GMAW welding processes on carbon steel and other alloys as required Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and welding procedures Execute full-penetration welds on plate and structural components in various positions (flat, vertical, overhead) Ensure all welds meet quality standards, including visual inspection and non-destructive testing requirements Operate welding equipment, grinders, torches, and related tools safely and efficiently Maintain a clean and organized work area in compliance with safety regulations Follow all company safety policies, OSHA guidelines, and job site procedures Work collaboratively with supervisors, fitters, and other team members to meet production goals Perform minor fabrication, fitting, and layout work as needed Assist in troubleshooting and resolving welding or fabrication issues
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED preferred Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a plate welder in shipbuilding, fabrication, or heavy industrial environments Proven ability to pass 1st Class welding certification tests (e.g., FCAW/SMAW plate tests) Strong knowledge of welding codes such as AWS and ABS standards Ability to read and interpret blueprints and welding symbols Skilled in using hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in physically demanding conditions
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly Capable of standing, bending, kneeling, and climbing for extended periods Comfortable working in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, and confined spaces
Work Environment:
Shipyard, fabrication shop, or industrial facility setting Exposure to loud noise, fumes, dust, and heavy equipment Use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
