Job Description
Position Summary The Welder / Fitter is responsible for fabricating, fitting, and welding metal components in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications, and quality standards. This role combines precision welding with accurate fitting and assembly to ensure finished products meet performance, safety, and dimensional requirements. This position is designed for a skilled trades professional with strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to craftsmanship. The Welder / Fitter works collaboratively with production, engineering, and quality teams on a variety of projects, supporting efficient fabrication processes and high‑quality outcomes. Through hands‑on expertise and dedication to excellence, this role contributes directly to Universal Fabricating's commitment to superior manufacturing and continuous professional development. Key responsibilities Layout, position, and secure parts and subassemblies according to specifications, using straight edge, combination square, callipers and ruler. Tack-weld and welds components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment. Observes tests in welded surfaces, such as hydrostatic, x-ray, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications. Inspect groves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometre, calliper, and precision measuring instruments. Grinding, hand filing and scraping of rough metal. Analyses engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly and welding operations. Performs preventative maintenance on all tools and equipment needed to perform the job. Has working knowledge of adjusting values, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc. Adhere to and maintain to all policies, procedures, and health and safety measures as prescribed by the company and the law. Work with supervisors to ensure job progress as planned. Clean and maintain work area. Other duties as assigned. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Organized and clean work habits. Works well independently and in a team. Communicative, cooperative and adaptable. Qualifications 2-3 years' experience as a welder / fitter required. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings. Knowledgeable on different types of metals and their properties. Familiarity with welding equipment and tools. Strong attention to detail. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Knowledge on maintenance and operation of various machinery. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Knowledgeable of safe work practices and precautionary measures. Education and Experience High school or GED is preferred. Skilled trades schooling is an asset. Certificates, licenses, and registrations Not required. Physical Demands Frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. Standing and walking for extended periods of time. Kneeling, reaching, pulling and pushing. Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Work Environment Industrial shop floor; weld bay environment. Exposure to heat, bright light, fumes, vibration and loud noises. Varying temperatures. Exposure to metal debris.
